All the carnage and destruction caused by the Civil War and mr cromwell was for NOTHING.....England still ended up with a King....maybe they curtailed a bit of the old ...."Off with their Head "... a bit.....but what did it achieve ???.......Opps..cant answer that question as my English History aint that hot these days .....you would know more about that than me Rob.......cheers TomB

Trouble is that its a very controversial subject with very strong opinions on either side to this day because of what he did in Ireland, the siege of Drogheda being perhaps one of the most infamous events. I think overall the return of Monarchy was much welcomed and the idea of Puritanism is to this day pretty much despised and mocked , but as I say touchy subject so I'll leave it there:wink2:

The most positive thing I can say about Cromwell is that the Civil War is a useful way to illustrate the difference between short-term and long-term causes when teaching history.

Thank you for that.... You have got me interested...I will have to check out the Irish bit ..,,,a lot of Irish settled in Aust and still are,,,,,Me and me wife have Irish blood way back somewhere...my son has several Irish mates....they are as mad as meat axe's..no insults intended... good lads...they have helped me with work around the house which I was unable to do.....I keep the conversation away from politics's when I have a couple of drinks with them....religion has caused so many bloody problems in Ireland,,,,and I mean bloody in the real sense .......cheers TomB

Thank you guys for your interesting points of view.

Interesting to know the opinion from english speaking language guys who know better and have more sensibility than me on this carachter and this background. So personally, I have no point of view on him,I just watched a documentary on TV and then read something...I just find Cromwell historically interesting as a break of history.
What is amazing is that all of you have a negative judgment, both british and irish origin people members.So everybody agrees!
Please keep on the conversation for those who wish, I like to read it

I was replying to the original post, pointing out that as a member of The Life Guards (the senior regiment of the British army and bodyguard to the Sovereign) I am obviously a royalist. I don't understand why I seam to have offended you? Please explain.

No problem mate, but let me reasure you that any diminutive name we (Household Division) have for Her Majesty is purely because of the closeness we feel towards her! When it comes down to traditions, you wouldn't believe the palavar when a member of each regiment is involved!
