Johannahoeveweg – September 17, 1944 at approx 1540-1600. With difficulties unloading some of their Jeeps due to bad crash landing, the 1st Airborne Recce Squadron was unable to fully assemble for their Coup de Main mission until two and a half hours after the Pathfinders had landed. Lt Bucknall of C Troop was selected to lead two Reece Jeeps ahead of the main force and moves along Johannahoeveweg towards Arnhem Bridge. Here, they are performing the standard leapfrog maneuver and about to be ambushed by elements of the 16th SS Panzer Grenadier Training Battalion, the first of many rapid German blocking responses that affected the outcome Operation Market Garden. Of the eight troopers sent on this mission, only two survived the attack and were then taken prisoner. Not able to find a route thru the German blocking lines to the bridge, the remainder of the Recce force would retire to the Wolfheze train station and set up defensive positions. -- Alex
