Pacific: Episode 9 (1 Viewer)

Ok, now that the series is about to wrap up the question remains "Band of Brothers" or "The Pacific". These are two entirely different beast that portray two very different fronts of WWII, so the decision was hard for me to make. In the end I found myself more attached to "Band of Brother". It seemed every episode flew by and I could hardly wait until the next. "The Pacific" at times bored me? There were those one or two episodes that I found myself trying to stay awake with. Another thing I noticed was that other then the airfield "The Pacific" failed to show that many engagements during the day. I would have love to seen more conflicts during the day so I could see more then a muzzle flash at night. There is much more that I would love to rant and rave about but the wife is calling me to watch "House" so I will finish my thoughts later.

By all means do not miss a moment of house, they usually work during daylight hours. Im sure the actual participants in the pacific battles might have preferred more daytime engagements also, those pesky muzzle flashes just werent made for the future of TV that they were fighting for. Its almost time for oprah also isnt it?

Oprah? Is this a show your recommending? I'm not aware of the schedule but it appears you are. I'm not that into talk shows so I'll let you have your "Oprah" and I'll stick with "House".

I'm not that naive to not know that there were alot of night time engagements, but we both know that the pacific front had its fare share of daytime engagements as well. I think for a miniseries it would have been beneficial for views such as us that appreciate detail to be able to see some of it. Not sure were you were going with the muzzle flashes. I didn't say They should of taken it out, that is exactly what I would expect to see during a night time engagement.

Just thought Op. may have been more relevant rather then Pacific, You are correct on one point,,and some of us actually have seen muzzle flashes during night time engagements.

"BORING"??

We have already discussed how SEVERAL episodes and times of BOB was BORING to us....................Stryker

There IS NO COMPARISON..................Stryker

I think we should bear in mind that everybody has their favorite. However, they're not mutually exclusive; liking one doesn't mean that you can't like the other. Both were wonderful series, showing how men (maybe boys) were exposed to situations that most of us would never want to be in.

Absolutely, both are superb studies of men under extreme stress and the kind of things that were done so we could be free of the Nazi's and Japenese. Not only are they very entertaining war series but a sobering reminder of how lucky we are.

Band of Brothers,Pacific,Saving Private Ryan,its all good:cool:.

Well said, Rob.

"BORING"??

" Boring",,,,,,,perhaps in the sense that time between combat actions spent digging in,,Staying awake all night due to those pesky night actions,,maintaining weapons,,trying to eat or perform other functions ,not be as wet or filthy ,might not be very interesting to some observers searching for entertainment, add the time spent wishing you were anywhere else, thinking of anything else if possible, being angered, tense ,stressed, worried and many other things most likely add up to boredom for some types. Injecting that bit of realism that a soldiers life involves may be boring,if the other 90% of really boring things were shown it would be a total ratings killer. My own warped perspective

"What are we going to do now?",,,Snafu,,episode 10

Can't pick one series over the other as I think they were both extremely well done and realistic. I found nothing in either series to be boring. I was fascinated by it all. I was especially impressed with the night actions in The Pacific and thought that the confusion, noise, and sudden violence was well conveyed. For that matter, my favorite BoB action was the night raid in the Hagenau episode. I found the down times in the 2 series to be very interesting as well as it is important to see how the characters dealt with combat after the fact. Both series just reinforced that the American fighting man endured h**l to defeat 2 dangerous opponents and sacrificed their youth and lives for our country. Pretty good lesson in history, I'd say. -- Al

I think everybody likes anything German because they were the best dressed, had the best weapons, tanks, etc. Pretty imposing to look down the barrel of a massive Tiger tank. "The Pacific" was more front-line soldiers fighting with no more than the shirt on their backs in primitive conditions and the weapons in their hands...That's what makes it more impressive...the conditions that all combatants had to go through, the human aspect of it. My dad hated japanese like all other Marines that fought against them, but he sure respected them..

Snafu has become one my favorite characters. I want to see what happens when he goes home. (If they happen to show it.)

If there is any realism there is no "going home" for our beloved Snafu,,My opinion,,his background perhaps not the strongest, family etc,,Think he would be a hit at most family dinners,?,most likely not able to adjust to military garrison life ,after what he has been thru having an over ranked remf moron tell him his shoes arent shined would begin a trip to the stockade and a discharge. There is no option for people like him staying in the military. On the outside having any kind of marriage-marriages has zero odds,an ex wifes divorce attorneys delight,,a job? with all the greatest generation draft dodgers and there were millions ,holding what pays well already and fearful of losing it ,Snafus "Skills learned in the military " may not translate well to civilian trades.Believe he would do well with an idiot boss? Going to school? a laugh to about two thirds of us that tried it. A VA psych ward? The local facility here has guys going off balconies with sheets tied around their necks, heard much about that?,,,There is a little Snafu in a lot of us,,he is home now.

So I guess what you're saying is things are not going to turn out swimmingly for Snafu then, right?.................

I hate to burst anyone's bubble here, but according to a very good source, SNAFU spent the rest of his days alive and well in the New Orlean's area in business................Stryker

Very true. Sledge's book lists him as a survivor. -- Al

surprised and happy to be wrong
As you probably know, the Marines and Army suffered horrible casualties taking Okinawa. Sledge says K/3/5 landed with about 65 Peleliu vets amongst their numbers. Only 26 of the vets remained with Co. K at the end of the campaign. Snafu (Merriel Shelton) was one of them. Snafu did come down sick but recovered to return to duty during the campaign. They sure paid a high price for us all. -- Al

Yes he did; he was a veteran of the canal, so he was far ahead of everyone in the "appearing to be out there" aspect, it took awhile for everyone else to catch up to him.

He adjusted quite well to life after the war I am happy to report........................
