I knew who Paddy Mayne was but did some Googling and Wikipediaing and thought I would share basics.
Irish Rugby International and all around good sportman including boxing. Qualified as lawyer before the war. Recruited as founding member of SAS / LRDG by David Stirling. Took over command when Stirling captured.
Earned four Distinguished Service Orders for his actions in the field. Monty personally signed his recommendation for a VC which was not approved and a DSO awarded instead. A lot of talk in UK Parliament in last few years about approving the VC which appears not to have been awarded becuase the High Command looked down upon the SAS guys. Even the King expressed his surprise that he had not got a VC.
Returned to law after the war. Liked a fight and described as Britains best fighting soldier. Had a drink problem and died in traffic accident when hit a parked vehicle at speed. Ooly 40 when he died.
I believe there is a good documentary on him but have not seen it.
Regards
Brett

I have it Brett around here some where the dvd.My Dad was in the SASR 2 tours of Vietnam 1 of Borneo i showed him the figure and he told me all the history about him.He was at the regiment today catching up dribbling alot of **** with his old mates i imagine,im going to get him the figure will be his first....:)

I did the same too yesterday. He was obviously a very brave man indeed and through himself into very heroic deeds,he is believed to have destroyed 130 aircraft on the ground during raids on German airfields. As Andy said in Dispatches it sounds like he could be difficult and remote from fellow soldiers,it is thought he had a dislike for senior officers and is thought to have punched one of them,he was saved from court martial by David Stirling.Urban legends grew up regarding his tendency to indulge in brawls whilst drinking, however this is probably grossly exaggerated and he was without doubt a very brave soldier who caused the Germans many many headaches.

Brett,a film would be really good,he sounds like a real character and the film certainly would have a lot to cram in!.

Thats the dvd Great SAS missions, it has loads of information about how the sas was formed. Its on play.com for a reasonable £9.99.

I read on a book by Gavin Mortimer , that Mayne was a tall fellow..so i hope the figure (already pre-ordered here on Treefrog) will make justice to the real "Paddy" Mayne, but i presume it will be so..already other personalities were perfect in reproducing the stature of their real counterparts (Alexander , Stirling ..i didn't own him yet but from what i see is really tall..Montgomery).

Thanks so much for sharing all the info guys about "Paddy":D

I really didn't know much about this bloke so thanks heaps for sharing.

If you know of any links that are worth checking out about this amazing man, please post some.

As a young 43yr old collector it still amazes me how much I really don't know about the Desert campaign.....I suppose thats what makes the hobbie so interesting!!:p

Cheers Toddy

Toddy,
That's great. Just don't put any Orcs in it :D:D
Now stop wasting time reading this and get back to The Dambusters :p:p:p

Just seen this thread.
The book "Stirling's men" by Gavin Mortimer gives a great insight into the SAS and the various characters including Paddy mayne who made up the group.

A 6 feet 4ins International Rugby 2nd row with a dislike for authority was always going to be a problem but reading about each o the actions for his four DSO's it's pretty obvious the 2establishment" prevented him getting a V.C..

The author interviewed 60 or so veterans and it's illuminating to read of their exploits in France which normally seem to be overlooked.

Highly recommended reading.

Clive
