However, there is no white showing at all.. With the brush, what you are trying to do is suggest the eyelids, sclera, iris and pupil. Now what is most important when painting a 54 mm is the painting of the anatomical features like the muscle of the jaws..
What toy soldiers companies are doing is an oversimplification process as people drawing comics do.

Nice job. . . but rather a one of a kind military miniature subject to close inspection , not multiple toy soldiers that stand together in a group, perhaps with multiple groups.. There is quite a difference between the two.

For me, leaving the eyes blank on a figure would not do. Its for me, as important a feature as you get. Eyes and the lips are vital then, obviously the facial shadows build the scene. I have only seen it done on one set of figures in this hobby where it kind of worked and that was the original CS berlin LAH troops. don't know if it was design or omission but, it gave them a rather more aggressive look. If that makes any sense?
