Painting Goreham's Rangers French & Indian War (1 Viewer)

Thanks for those - though they are a bit earlier than the 1759 one that I wanted - which you gave me earlier. I'll save the lot though - into my "Marines File". Interesting collection you found there. Cheers - here's another from the 1740's jb^&grin

Hi again - I have found just a couple more illustrations that may be of use to you for your project.

First one is an early one, circa 1750 of a Nova Scotia Ranger, which came with the suggestion that this was the Official title of Goreham's Rangers - which were called Goreham's unofficially, because of the name of their Commanding Officer. It was the first British Corps raised in North America - and acknowledges the fact that many of the men recruited were of Native American Indian origin.

This figure could well be an illustration form which the Imrie-Risley figure was derived.

The next illustration I found is from a bit later on (1778-1783) - and is of a Butler's Ranger. He is uniformed in green with red facings. This man is in campaign dress and is wearing his lapels buttoned over. It has been suggested that he should be wearing a leather cap - but often wore this unofficial kerchief style heaqdwear on campaign. It has further been suggested that Butler's men often wore green smocks in the field. I have included it - in case you may want it for some future project. jb

Yes - thanks for the reminder about that "Vinkhuijzen Collection" in NY. I first bumped into that marvelous collection a few years ago - which has over 32,000 pictures and illustrations of very early uniforms from many countries - though somewhat surprisingly - as you say - NOT from the USA. Old "Vink" was a Dutch Doctor with links to the military - who collected anything he could find on military uniforms - and destroyed many books in filling up his scrap-books.

They aren't neatly organised though - so it's a bit of a time consuming lottery to plough through the complete collection to look for something that may - or may not - turn up - but as you have shown - it occasionally throws up the odd surprise. I assume those pics of early British Marines are from circa 1745 - when ten Regiments of Corps of Marines were involved in America.

I must admit, I had clean forgotten about that collection as a possible source for Marines at Quebec in 1759, so thanks for the reminder - I must have another peek or two................jb

Last week was the first time I saw that website, should come in handy in the future. Working on a few things at the moment and got to find time to paint. Painting Native American Plains Indians and from time to time anything about the French & Indian War.

I had some fun painting some American Native Indians a while back - when restoring a Stagecoach and also painting up some Buffalo Soldiers. I ended up with these very colourful specimens!

Great fun to paint - as you can really let the imagination go with this subject area. jb

Looks like you had the same idea - but a bit before me John! They look just great. I was afraid to go too far with the horse decoration - or the warpaint - but maybe with the next ones I find - I'll be a bit braver. Adios, amigo - jb^&grin
