Thanks for the insights - I can't wait to get there ! :D

I just got back after some serious drinks with an old friend tonight - we have know each other for many years and have worked together in Congress "back in the day" - As we talked about the old days .... I realized that I have been to all different parts of the World - Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, KL, North Africa, all throughout Germany, Denmark, Belgium, England, South Pacific, New Zealand, Thailand, South America, Canada, Italy, Uzbekistan, many more places as a Congressional Staffer and some places I am still not aloud to talk about - but, NEVER PARIS ?

So - I await to be charmed by the City of Lights ! :D

You've never been to Paris? Oh, my boy, you are in for a treat. You haven't lived until you've been to Paris. I hope you're taking your wife with you. I've been to Paris three times and each time I leave I can't wait to come back. Paris is a city where you have to work hard to find a bad meal. I'll see if I can get you some recommendations. Also, do me a favor, have some crepes for me from one of those outside vendors. They are the best.

Here are a couple of recommendations:

A L'Ami Louis at 32 Rue du Vertbois. Located in the old Jewish Quarter. Food is incredible but it is not cheap and I mean very, very expensive but it's fantastic. I believe they are only open Sundays and you need a reservation as it's very small.

La Butte Chaillot at 110 bis avenue Kleber. Very nice place. It's in the general vicinity of the Eiffel Tower. Here is their La Butte Chaillot.

On Sundays, there is a great open air market on the left bank on Boulevard Raspail. You don't have to buy anything but it's just fun to go. Good crepes there too, plus some local wines.

On Sundays, there is the flea market over at Marche aux Puces at Porte de Clignancourt. Here's a link to the Marche aux Puces web site. It's very easy to get to by Metro. I remember being in a couple of military shops.

Thanks for the tips - I wrote them down and will try to see it all !

I believe Mrs. Phillips is going to have more free time on her hands than me. I will be spending most of my days in meetings and selling Tanks & Artillery Weapons ;)

Ah - but, nights :D

Really, its amazing all the places I have been in the world - Paris never made it on the list ? - I would love to get back to ROME as well, thats for another day. Just two days away and I am starting to get excited. :)

Ron,

I assume your wife has already been to Paris but in case she hasn't and is going to see the sights while you're working your fingers to the bone, besides the Louvre, she should see the Musee d'Orsay which is just across the Seine from the Louvre. They have an incredible collection of Impressionists. Also under the Louvre is a nice little shopping mall, with some interesting shops, not to mention the Louvre bookstore, which has many things that make for great gifts.

It's also a nice walk from the Louvre through the Tuileries to the Champs, where she probably wants to go anyway;) for shopping.

Oh, I am so jealous!

Yes - my little Wellesley Art History major is licking her chops at every Museum in Paris

She went one time in high school - so she is very excited about this trip - who knows maybe we can walk away some serious Toy Soldiers because she will be so happy ! ;)

Both of those museums on her list and she has been listening to French Language CDs and driving me CRAZY - Bonjour ! , Je voudrais le vin rouge s'il vous plaît !

Look I just want some French Bread & some Good Red Wine - and a bag full of toy soldiers :D - I will be fine.

Tomorrow - we leave........oh boy ! :D

Getting very excited ! Thanks to al of you who have shared your tips and comments about Paris - it is amazing what everyone has as a place to go and it is all different.

We just downloaded - Rick Steves - Paris Tours on my wife's Ipod - now I wont see her for a week ;)

Ron,

your wife is Wellesley, mine is Babson (business school right there). I always find it ironic this South of the Mason Dixon line fella married a girl who went to school in the blue blood North. To top it off, the Southern Belle I dated in College (complete with an estate on the historic register in Tennessee with Confederate Cannon pits on the property) ended up marrying a Yankee from upstate New York.

Funny how things work out (which I wouldn't trade for anything).

Rick Steves is great. We took his guidebook with us to Paris in 2004 and found it very helpful.

You got it Brad - remember the Euro is killing us - not sure what it will cost? Do you know ??

I will be glad to be your MULE ;)

As long as you don't try bodypacking ot Ron I am sure Brad will be grateful

Paris is a great city! I mis-spent a good portion of my year studying abroad there . . . at the time a school buddy of mine had a flat on the Rue de Normand in the latin quarter. Nothing like free digs!:D:cool:

Prosit!

Yes - I love Bavaria too - Munich is the HQ for Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.

Munich is a beautiful city I enjoy going ever year.

And YES - Napoleon was the last great French General - without a doubt.

But, I dont understand what a goat has to do with anything ??

lol, Null Bock means "no desire". It's originally student slang. The billy goat (der Ziegenbock is an old symbol of potency, and so, they carried the meaning over, slightly.

I was a language student, philology, etymology, etc. Now I work in IT. Who'd have known?

But seriously, have a safe trip!

Prost!
