I am leaving for Paris this weekend for a business trip - I plan to drop by TOYSOLDIERS PARIS - anyone been there ??

Any help hints on finding the place and what's in store for me when I get there ?? :D :D

I can think of four shops. Problem is I have trouble with the names. There are two big ones in the Palais Royale. The first one...well, you hit the left hand route, as you face into the courtyard from the street. You walk about a block or two and it's in that allee, left hand side. Lots of LeCimier stuff, last time I was there. Then there's the big one in the main block at the start, near the front, the heaviest concentration of shops. As you look into the courtyard it's on your right...can't miss it. Big big place. They have lots of stuff there...all of it overpriced. Gotta be Let's Make a Deal, except that they do enough business that they can be hardnosed. I;ve been there about three times. Hard bargaining...they had noses in the air...finally called madame, who was more human, but still a tough bargainer. Couldn;t put much of a dent in them. Never bought anything there. Fooey!
Third shop is tres serieiux...run by Christian Blondieu, who has written a few books on mil.min. It's called Le Kepi Rouge and it's on 78 Ave.de Suffren. Telephone: 01-45-67-59-83 Cell: 06 80 41 58 68. It's in a development called The Swiss Village...looks very touristy-glitchy but it's a good shop. He's got lots of flats in the original antique Heinrichsen boxes. Also lots of other stuff. A good shop. Bargaining est permitte, in fact you HAVE TO.
Fourth shop is near Le Marais...can't remember the name...the RUSSIAN something. You'll have to ask around. All Russian stuff. Nice lady runs it but she's on the road a lot and the assistants don;t know nuttin' from nuttin.' Lots of St.Petersburg handmades. Prices negotiable, but a waste of time if Madame is not there.
Hope all this helps. Paul Zimmerman. drz_07046@yahoo.com

Paul,

Are you the Dr. Z from SI? Mike De Marco used to tell me that you went to his shop in Chester.

Ron, you're a very lucky man, I definitely wouldn't mind a spell in Paris for the weekend!

I was lucky enough to spend a few days there with my lovely lady at the start of April and was able to fit in a visit to Toysoldiers Paris (my profile picture, although a little bit hard to make out, is me posing in front of the shop with my new purchases!). I'd heartily recommend it for a visit if you can fit it into your itinerary.

Getting to the shop via the Metro is relatively straightforward; we got off at Oberkampf (on Line 9), which was quite nearby, but in hindsight, having actually found the shop, going to Bastille station ( by either Lines 8, or 1) would be even quicker. Once you’re in the general vicinity, the shop itself is easy enough to find, it’s at the very end of Rue Amelot – the end of the street that opens out onto the Place de la Bastille – so if you can navigate your way to the Bastille Metro station, you’re literally almost within spitting distance.

The shop itself is relatively small, but absolutely fully stocked. On the day of my visit, they had what seemed to be the complete K&C range in stock and on display, as well as an almost equally comprehensive collection of John Jenkins, Britains, Figarti, etc. ( and probably even more besides, but those are the manufacturers I can remember for certain). I found it a very, very enjoyable experience as it was the first time I’d been inside an actual bricks and mortar toy soldier shop, as opposed to ordering online as per usual – even allowing for my girlfriend’s extreme patience and interest, it was a definite effort to tear myself away.

Staff were very helpful and friendly, full range of your favourite manufacturers, in a perfect setting – so it’s a full thumbs up from me! Just make sure to double check the opening hours of the shop before you set out, as it would be a real annoyance to arrive too early or late!

Aside from all that, I won’t bother to list the other military themed attractions that Paris has to offer, I’m sure you’ve already done your own full research. Suffice to say the Mussee de l’Armee is a place where anyone even vaguely into military history could happily kill a week or two in, and of course, I’ve no doubt you’ll be paying a visit to the great man himself in Les Invalides:)!

Enjoy your trip, mate,

Molloy.

Thanks Ron, that is pretty sweet looking. Any idea of cost. I'd kind of like one too.

If you really want one PM me and I will see what I can do - no promises.

No probs, Ron! Enjoy your trip, for a Napoleonic fan there can't be too many better places to visit!

Cheers,

Molloy.

Are you going to visit Mignot's shop, too, while you're there? It's still "Au Plat d'Etain", isn't it?

Prost!

Hi Guys,

We’ll always have Paris…’ is a line from one of my all-time favourites ‘Casablanca’ and is exactly how I feel about this magnificent city.

For many years London was always my favourite destination until I discovered Paris. And what a discovery… this city just oozes romance, history and charm. It’s a place that’s meant to be explored on foot. It has the best food… wine… and some of the finest looking women.

And it has the French… Now I’m not being facetious but since I’ve met and made such great friends as Fred and Thierry (Toy Soldier Paris) and many other French friends I’ve also uncovered the ‘real’ Paris – not just the tourist version and… c’est magnifique!

It’s only when you visit Paris you realize what a great history France has and what that great country and people have given to the world. Are the French difficult at times… mais oui but when you visit Paris and open your eyes and senses to the city you can forgive them everything!

Best wishes,

Andy C.
