Pickett's Charge, July 3rd, 1863 (1 Viewer)

Wow! That is some set-up! Makes me want to watch Gettysburg again!
Rick

Thanks for the feedback Rick; I'll be watching Lincoln tonight and Gettysburg tomorrow night as a matter of fact......

Are those on the tube or you just have the DVDs?

George,

When you decide you're going to do a diorama like this, I imagine you must sketch it out and come up with plans as to how you're doing it. I'm sure it's not one -- or can't be -- of those ad hoc things.

Brad

Amazing work George. The detailing on the figs is outstanding. The size of your dio really captures the feel of the scope of the battle. I never tired of looking at the Greenspan maps in the school library, until someone cut them out! I have the American Heritage book now. Chris

Brad,
When I decide to do a diorama, I have numerous books with maps and wargaming scenerios that show terrain features and troop placements. As you said, I do sketch out what I plan on doing based on these reference materials as my guide.

From there, I lay out the groundwork, then start putting the terrain out, then put out the figures.

It is a process; in the past, I've started a diorama and just don't like the way it's coming together, so I scrap it.......................

Thanks Chris, I appreciate your feedback. I first saw the Greenspan map in the American Heritage book on Gettysburg and was blown away as a 10 year old, even more so when my Aunt bought me the full volume of the war from them with dozens of Greenspan maps in it.

It's always been a goal of mine to recreate those maps in miniature, it's nice when a dream becomes a reality........

Hi George,

Your Pickett's Charge and Cemetery Hill displays are awesome. I can imagine the time and effort on your part to put these together and at what better time than the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. As I said in another thread, my knowledge of the ACW is not great, so I have been trying to read up on the Battle of Gettysburg. I find reference to good maps and even sketches very helpful when reading about any military campaign/battle. Also, I must try to get a look at the Greenspan map in the American Heritage book on Gettysburg.

Best Wishes, Raymond. :)

Thanks Raymond, always nice to hear from you, hope you are well and thanks for your comments.

The American Heritage book on the American Civil War is epic, it is loaded with Greenspan maps on most of the ACW battles.

Although simplistic in nature, they give the viewer a very good idea as to how the battles shaped up and as a youngster, they inspired me to collect toy soldiers.............

George, apologies if this question has been asked and I missed it, but how long does it take you to set up these stunning dio's?

Hi Rob,
I takes me a bit of time to plan them out, get the terrain right, figure out what battle I want to do, etc, etc.

Once that's established, to lay out the mat, put up the fencing, buildings, trees, etc, then lay out the troops usually takes me about 6 to 8 hours, usually not all in one go, I chip away at it over time.

Once it's set up, I'll mess with it for a few more hours, adding scenery, adding figures, shifting figures around.

So the entire process from start to finish takes about 10 to 12 hours................

That's quite a few hours but the work you put into them George really pays off, awesome scenes they really are. ^&cool

Rob

I enjoy it, researching and planning the layout is half the fun, setting it up and enjoying it is the other half...........

Once again very nicely done George you've become a master at it. By the way our Richard Walker took part in Pickett's Charge while at Gettysburg yesterday. Have a safe trip if you've decide to head off to Gettysburg......Joe:salute:::salute:::salute::

Was going through some old threads and came across this post, what a kick in the ***.

Man am I going to miss the Lt.......................:(
