I like to see how many forum members are just collectors as opposed to builders/painters.

Thanks for voting!

Re: Poll: Are you a painter, collector, both, nither?

I like both knd of equally, so there was response from me.

Re: Poll: Are you a painter, collector, both, nither?

I buy kits but have others paint them for me.

I am primarily a collector and occasionally dabble in painting some of my own.

Interesting idea for a poll. Never been asked before, to my recollection.

Yea Brad, I did a search and couldn't find a thread that dealt with this issue. For the record I do both, but prefer painting my own. For me it's more satisfying.

How about a choice for "I tried it and was very good at it as a youth when I couldn't afford to buy hand painted metal toy soldiers, but now that I am an over the hill dad, I have neither the eyesight, patience nor time to assemble and paint my own figures, I buy the ready made ones."

none of the questions in the poll fits my profile. I do a lot of conversions and repaints in 1/30th but, do still build a lot of figures usually busts and larger figures 90mm etc. very rarely paint 54mm for myself but, still do a lot of 1/35th scale military modelling and, 1/35th scale attack boats like the schnell boat.

Sounds like this would be the best one for you then :-

I do both, but I prefer assembling and painting my own figures

Louis, You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time. It seems like I heard this somewhere before. :rolleyes2:

This describes my pattern to a tee. I used to build, paint and sell figures when I was in the 16-25 age group. Haven't done it since my first born came along in 1978. Strictly pre-painted now, and I have enough trouble seeing them!{sm2} Couldn't vote in the poll. -- Al

I do both. I enjoy modeling and painting figures but I find myself buying more finished products now. I don't paint many castings anymore but still have plenty to finish. I do like painting Dragon 1/35 figures. J

Converting is my enjoyment.
I began buying completed metal figures.
After I had seen some converted figures, I jumped right into that.
Occasionally, I buy painted plastic figures.
I usually paint them myself.

The things I've painted and built mean much more to me than the pre-finished figures that I've bought. I'm still not a terrific painter but I continue to improve and I enjoy it very much.

I'm a 95% painter, and the result of that is I'm now a collector.

I started as a kid, with plastics, AIRFIX, then kits and onto HISTOREX, which started my interest in Napoleonics.

Luckily I kept my old HISTOREX for many years, and my reference books, so later in life, after going to work, travelling, chasing women, catching one :), having kids, renovating houses etc. I had some spare time to take up my childhood passion, painting. Now I had the income to purchase castings and also mould to cast my own, so I stated again.

The internet brought me into the international toy soldier circles, so I set up a website of all the soldiers I have painted, so if you have time, have a look at Toy Soldier On-Line Gallery and all the rest is history.

Now I get loads of painting jobs, and so with that payment, I buy castings or painted figures, like K&C NAPS, so my hobby is cost neutral :) :) :)

I agree that the figures I paint do hold a special place in my collection. At the least you know nobody will have that exact figure because you impart your own personallity with you individual style of painting.

I glad to see there are more builders/painters than I first thought. There is so much discussion on the forum about ready made figures, I reasoned that most of our members were just collectors. I'm plesantly suprised to see that I was wrong. {eek3}

I've been on your site John and I am amazed at how much you have painted.Continued success.

Oh, another reason to be a painter first, is its a whole lot cheaper too!! That make my wife happy :)

Take the cost of a casting, a few pots of paint and some brushes, and you are far ahead.

But, it takes time, AND time is money!

I paint as a way of realxing after a day at the office sitting infront of a computer screen. I'm a cartographer by profession and all my training was with pen and ink and colouring done with watercolours, so I do have an 'eye for detail' and a steady hand.

regards,

John

I am a painter and a collector . Whenever someone sees my collection , the first question is always "Did you paint them ? " It is nice to point out the ones that I did paint !

Im 99% Painter/Builder i might buy say 2 Factory painted Figures each year {and sometimes not even that}.
And when i do buy a prepainted fig the buzz only last about 5mins but when i buy a set of plastic/kit or little Metal castings i can just sit there for hrs and just marvel at the great sculpting and then theres the joy of painting them!
