Must say I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of prof Richard Holmes agrd 65 today. He was a very popular Historian with books and tv series on the Western front in WW1, Battlefields tv docu, Churchill series and another on Wellington amongst others. He wrote many books including Riding the retreat (Mons) and Tommy (WW1) as well as books to go with his tv series, I for one will really miss his work. RIP

What a shame, he will certainly be well remembered.

Yes he really will, his WW1 work was fascinating, he descriptions of the British Army's rifle skill at Mons and the Horror they suffered in the Sunken Lane on the Somme were both shocking and enthusiastic, his passion for his subject always came across in his work.

I enjoyed his work. He was a fine writer and he will be missed. -- Al

Ditto. I enjoyed his writing as well as his work on the DVDs for the BBC's History of WW II.

RIP.

Yes, I think it was you Brad who mentioned his Battlefields series a couple of weeks back, I really enjoyed that programme. Doesn't say what he died of but 65 is quite young .

A great loss. He was one of the most notable military authors and broadcasters, a gentleman and a gentle man. Trooper
