Yes. It seems that French uniforms dominated prior to and after the Emperor Maximilian case and the American Civil War.
I guess Prussian military dominance then influenced most South American and European countries. However I also think that it was more costly to manufacture pickelhaubes than French kepis and France was still quite dominant in their overseas possessions. Hence the continuation of the kepi in the Foreign Legion. I do think that the British toppee pith helmets evolved from the pickelhaube.
