Queen & Country: Late Victorian Colonial Forces (2 Viewers)

Looks more like a figure by Bill Horan. He does one of a kind pieces, true works of art.

Polar Bear, could you post the site address of where you found this image?
Thanks.

In looking at it again, it might be a model, painted by an obviously skilled painter, probably not in 1/30 or 1/32 scale.

More than just a skilled painter, these figures are scratch built 1/32 scale. Horan's work is probably the best there is in one of a kind military miniatures. Jim Holt is another talented military miniature artist who's style at times is similar to Horan's, this might be one of his.

I have a friend who makes models like this that are scratch built and highly detailed but also quite expensive. He made one of Rommel and AK and one for the Band of Brothers. The complexion of the figure plus the way he is standing reminded me of that work.

I found this example from the Anglo-Sudan Campaign on the web and offer it as inspiration to all those who hope Andy will do a Queen & Country collection. The figure is a Black Watch Highlander from the 42nd Division very likely from the Battle of Tamai. Does anyone know if this figure is available from any company? There was no info at the site. Same site has some great figures from Zulu War and Indian Mutiny which I can post if there is interest. Randy

Hi Randy,

I am unfamiliar with the figure you have posted, but I agree with Brad. It looks like a Russian produced Connoisseur figure or an extremely well built model. It could possibly be produced by any number of studios or modelers.

I would very much like to see the Zulu War and Indian Mutiny figures you found. Perhaps one of those would lead us to the company or person who produced the Anglo-Sudan Campaign figure.

Thanks for posting the picture. It is a great figure!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Many of us like the late 19th Century British Colonial wars. Most of these figures have been done in glossy traditional style. Those of us who love K&C's detail and matte finish would love to see a Field of Battle Type series devoted to the Sudan & Egyptian Campaigns, the Zulu Wars, the North West Frontier, the Boer War, etc. I think this is a subject that could be done with a dealer sponsor such as the UK has done with the Crimean War.

Scenario: A new Field of Battle series called Queen (Victoria) & Country
1879 to 1902 covering colonial British forces and their enemies to be sponsored by the "Queen of Toy Soldiers" at Treefrog Treasures. These could be done as a limited edition if necessary.

Any interest out there?

I think there would be interest in going back before the Zulu war of 1879. The Sepoy Mutiny seems quite a popular subject. Also, we already have some figurines available in the Orient range that could be suitable to include in any display depicting the Opium wars (I'm thinking of the Imperial Cannon here). Me personally, I would love to see a new range depicting the Last Stand at Gandamack during the retreat from Kabul in the 1st Afghan war. That would make a magnificent display IMO.

Cheers

Now I know why you have the cover of Flashman as your avatar!

There is no doubt that the colonial capaigns have been overlooked. I will probably be beheaded for this but I would rather see some Red coats and savage foes than another German armoured vehicle

I happen to agree with you, Damian. I think that since Victorian Era imperial wars are where K&C got its start, the planned 25th Anniversary release is long overdue.

Hi Guys,

In answer to several posts on this interesting subject let me reply thus...Late Victorian campaigns and battles are indeed a great subject to collect and make however...

So is virtually every other great period of history mentioned and “posted” on Treefrog.

Over the last couple of years this Forum has produced a wealth (some might even suggest an over-abundance) of ideas...suggestions...thoughts...and even a few direct orders...to produce this battle, that campaign, this war, that war, any war that has ever captured anyone’s imagination for even a minute or two.

Well, as you might imagine, that poses one or two problems for every manufacturer. As many of you know it is impossible to “cover” every base and satisfy every single whim and every demand.

In the earlier days of K&C I made a fatal mistake in trying to be “all things to all people” and producing a little bit of everything to try and please as many collectors as possible. Believe me it’s impossible...I learnt the hard way that none of us will ever fulfill all of the needs, wants and requirements of this collector community.

So, what do I do now? Well, of course, I read (and listen) to all of your needs...wants...must haves and “why don’t you make this” religiously...every day of every week.

But, in the end I rely on the judgement...knowledge...and skills of the entire K&C team to select and choose what we will do...when we will do it and...how we will do it...pure and simple.

Collector’s dreams, hopes and aspirations are vitally important to us (and I hope our continuing success) but they are not the only factor that makes up the direction that this particular company, King & Country, will decide to go in the future or any other time.

This “post” is not intended to stifle anyone’s creativity but to encourage a modicum of practicality into the debate.

Best wishes...and Happy Collecting!

Andy C.

Must be very difficult to A)Decide what YOU want to do and B)Try and take in all the wants and ideas whilst sticking with your own instincts. We are in a very fortunate and still fairly unusual position in having the ear of the man in charge.I must say he shows more patience than i'd have with some of the demands he gets. And it also shows how having patience pays of for collectors too. There has been talk and not so many demands for FJs for a while now,and low they will be dropping from the sky next month!.

I think there is nothing wrong with discussing what you'd like to see on a forum like this, after all thats what a forum is all about. But there is a world of diff between that and demanding stuff all the time.Just my opinion for what its worth:)

Rob

Id sure it could be done if the demand was there,i came across this figure about a year ago from a part work by Hachette,i subscribed but they cancelled after the 4th figure,no explanation was given?(lack of demand)Anyway the series was called the SOLDIERS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE COLLECTION BY HACHETTE.
Heres an image of the 24th foot in its blister pack, ive got 2 so i will take a photo of the one i have removed from its pack. The figures about 60mm in matt and is often offered as King&Country, looks like it perhaps somebody more informed could answer that question? They appear quite often on ebay.
Its a pretty good figure, for a part work, sorts of wet my appetite for when King and Country does release some colonial sets:)
Ps i have the other figures if anybodys interested in a photo or details?

Very nice figure, especially as you say for a part work.I can see how people might try and pass it off as K&C.

Rob

I believe King and Country may have made figures for Hachettte at some point.

Aye caught bonnie....as usual.
Seriously though, I do think that a Queen & Country range would be a best seller.
PS. Will try to keep my "Gallows Humour" to myself in future. Don't want to offend anyone on this forum.

Thanks Rob.
Trust me, I'm no shrinking violet but there's no point in getting people's backs up - unless its a deliberate windup - several of which I've seen on this forum.:D
Having said that, I reckon a certain contributer on one of the NMA threads and my wee brother would get on like a house on fire. They could exchange emails ad nauseum arguing about holes in a gun mantlet - on their Tamyia kits...!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Cheers
