The rain started about a week ago in SE Queensland where Brisbane is. Has now moved south to New South Wales and Sydney. Quite a lot of very serious flooding in and around Brisbane. Some saying worse than the major floods in 2011. The main river that goes through city was worse in 2011 and that was due to a badly timed dam release. This caused more problems for property near the river including to many restaurants and shops by the river. I pass that river everyday and although high can see not as bad as 2011. Went past on Tuesday and Wednesday but did not seem to have gone down much and this is due to dam water being released as rain had stopped but more expected end of the week. However this event is more widespread as heavy rain over a larger area. Problem was happened very quick and many complaining no warning. Some got their warning several hours after their house went under.
There is a town of 45,000, Lismore, in northern NSW that I heard had lost 4 of its 7 supermarkets and roads cut off from outside. Remaining three not much stock left. Photos show many houses with water up to rooftops. Radio yesterday was saying town might run out of food. Planning to airlift food in by helicopter but seems not much aviation fuel around ! Army guys in shop were telling me they are going to be deployed to Lismore so I think that must be worse affected place.
Heard a story about rescue of a 93 year old man. Cop was paddling past his house and looked inside a window. The 93 year old was floating on his mattress 20cm from the ceiling. Cop went through window and rescued him.
80% of a years rain in about 4 days. Definitely most rain I have ever seen.
Have been lucky at shop and home as not near rivers or creeks. Did not go into shop today due to major storm and traffic issues due to road closures. More rain expected.
In Brisbane they are calling up the "Mud Army" again to help out businesses and house owners clean up. 10,000 signed up so far. Seems in NSW you have to be fully vaccinated to fill sandbags. Not sure about Qld.
Does not compare to what is happening in the Ukraine but hopefully the weatherman is wrong about more rain to come.
