Having been an avid concert goer in my teens, twentys, I was fortunate to see just about every major live rock act in their "hey day" at some point. That said over the last few years with my wife and son, I have been reliving my youth and have to say I am amazed if not impressed at how well the following have held up:
A. Ozzy - 2 summers ago, opening night of last tour - amazing, he was energetic for the 1hr 45 mins (albeit slightly shorter than the old days), but his vocal range is still there, my son, the musician could not believe it. We are seeing him again this summer upcoming in KC.
B. Billy Joel - 2 times in MSG last 4 years - timeless is the only word for him. Going back this Spring.
C. Kiss - same energy, etc as when I saw them in the 90s on reunion tour. Yes Peter was missing, not a huge loss, Eric Singer is a better drummer, did miss Ace Frehley though, but for the "end of the road", they gave it all.
D. Iron Maiden - words escape on how good and energetic they still are. Elaborate stage, costume changes, like seeing a mini opera all in one with heavy guitars, I can't say enough.
E. Fleetwood Mac - another time capsule and a great concert. Missed Lindsey, but Neil Finn and lead guitar from Tom Petty (Forget his name), did a great job filling in.
F. Elton John - my wife and I just saw him this weekend in Philly - WOW, almost 73 year old played for nearly 3hrs - 25 songs - all hits and never stopped. He is heavier in weight, but I honestly can't believe how good he still is.
Anyhow, I took a decade to 15 year break and sorry I did. The rock acts of the 60s, 70, 80s and some 90s are still better musicians than nearly all of the new stuff that is out there, just no comparison. I have a 15 year old who agrees, the new music is so computerized, taking no talent individuals and making them stars. It is beginning to become a lost art. What I find most amazing is that the so called "heavy metal" fad bands for the most part are still musically sound and have stood the test of time better than a lot of pop bands.
