I had a seller put this in after it was listed....I will never understand why sellers put this on their listings. You might as well restrict your listings to domestic buyers if you are going to do this. The other question is how does EBAY come up with their number as I think the purpose is simply to get paypal fees from Pitney Bowes. I personally boycott sellers that do this regardless if I want the item just out of principle... How do other Treefroggers deal with this year old money grab... Never mind you don't always have to pay custom duties and in this case you automatically do...

the only time I have seen this visible in any of my International sell ads...

is when my Ebay account settings defaulted to using "Ebay's Global Shipping program"...

which I don't use and despise...

it's guaranteed delivery for the seller/buyer...but it's sooooooooooooooo expensive to the buyer....that I won't use it...

I found out a way to completely override it by...

going into the Global Shipping Program settings section and selecting the override for Global Shipping Program eligible items...

Yep. FedEx also requires payment of Import charges and their processing. I avoid FedEx on International shipment now.

Totally agree soon as I see that custom charge I lose interest in buying from the seller as it kill the deal with the extra charge

Hi Guys,

Glad to see this being ventilated on Treefrog. Not that I think it will do any good! Like all of you, I too now boycott any seller who uses it.

The way the Customs Service operates here, in Australia, is that they don't bother to collect Customs duty/ Goods and Services Tax on items below $1,000 value which are clearly being imported by private citizens, for their own use. So, I haven't paid a cent of Customs duty or GST on any Soldiers I have imported in the last 15 years.

So, who gets my hard earned cash, if I was silly enough to buy a Global Freight item, if my (ie Australian) Customs Service doesn'i charge it? I certainly never got a refund!

I was also informed the other day that our favourite online "Auction House" is now charging, or is about to charge fees on the Freight component of a Sale! That's pretty greedy?

Living at the bottom of the habitable globe, as I do, I also have a huge beef about those lazy Sellers who rely on the terribly inaccurate "Postage Calculator" supplied by the USPS. Sometimes it is impossinle to shift them from the wildly expensive option put up by the "Official Source". They get boycotted too, now.

Early this year all Postal Authorities in the world (or so it seems) increased their rates by a huge %. As always, as the cost went up the quality of the Service went down. "Priority Post" is an absolute joke as it costs twice as much as Air Mail and takes twice as long to get here. And don't we just love those Sellers who insist upon it, and then take 2 weeks from payment, before they actually post the item.

Postage costs have the potential to kill that online auction house. It seems that the alternatives to the heavily privatised postal system are also as greedy and short sighted.

If anyone knows of a viable alternative, would they please share it with us.

Regards,

Bob

I almost never use ebay anymore - rarely in the last 2 years. I won't buy from anymore who uses the ebay postage calculator and import duties. And as for my selling, it's only by Canada Post.

They already charge fees on shipping to get you to give free shipping. I would rather pay the fee than voluntarily give free shipping. If an item sells far beyond what anticipated, I may then waive the shipping charge.

Unfortunately, there is no alternative for rare items. Just have to deal with it.

I dont use the Global Shipping and never will, i have it completely opted out of my listings. However, I would like to point out to my international friends that any item that weights packed over 4 lbs is ineligible now by USPS First CLass or Airmail, it is now automatically priority or Express. I also would like to point out that in order to have any protection via paypal, Express is the best option as it is tracked and fully insured and by the time you compare Priority with INsurance and Express Insured, the difference is less than $10 on most packages. SO, if I ship anything over $100, I usually will insist on Express INsured unless I know the buyer very very well.

The difference between Priority mail and Express mail for international shipments is only in the signature confirmation which comes with Express mail. Paypal requires a signature confirmation only for transactions (shipments) over $250, so $100 parcels are good with Priority mail.
You also can ship First Class parcels overseas with third party insurance you can easily purchase on-line : u-pic.com. It will eliminate a headache with First class postal insurance which USPS does not provide.
Just my two cents:)

I explained to the seller how the whole import charges makes his listing less appealing to non-domestic buyers and he agreed and all his new listings have excluded the import charges... sometimes you just need to ask...

Vast majority of parcels imported into the UK now incur import taxes and sales taxes. So many people get caught out thinking that they won't have to pay. I factor the cost in when bidding on items overseas.
