Red Tails, the new movie produced by George Lucas about the Tuskegee Airmen, opens this Friday (01.20.12). From watching the trailer (see link below), it looks simply amazing. As a community of collectors and historians, I think we should come together to support it. Who plans on going? If you do go, let everyone know what you think about it.

Will be seeing this Friday evening! I have been anticipating this day since I saw the trailer 3 months ago!

Look forward to this and, hope its a good one!! I liked the version with Lawrence wishbourne or bone can't remember and, did push for a release from K&C, of their aircraft last year to no avail.

My wife & I plan on seeing it. About seven years ago, I was lucky enough to get the autograph of one of the pilots when he was at an airshow. Plus, I have several of their reunion photos when they were in Columbia, SC.

Gentle Friends,

My wife and I plan tos see the movie as soon as our schedule allows us to do so. We will see it in the theater as I would not want to miss seeing the battle scenes on the large screen!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Saw that version, too. It was Lawrence Fishburne. Good actor, been around a long time. Was on the naval rivercraft in Apocolyse Now. -- Al

Al...

Cheers for that I was not even close!!!! I think he is a good actor and played a good part as Marion Bishop in assault on precinct 13.

looking forward to the film and some reports from those who will see it before I will

Randy...

Totally with you on that one. It would be a great aircraft and a fitting tribute and, if its good enough for a movie or two then it should be for Manufacturers

Funny that the grandfather, Robert Freeman, in the animated series Boondocks, was also in the Red Tails. The animated aircraft in the flashbacks were close to correct and had the Red Tails.

Saw it today,,,spectacular effects,,wonderful flying effects and aircraft,,,,very PC,,very today applied to the past and how things were at the time,,huge exagerations of scenes ,exploits ,,weak on military advisory as to radio discipline,,flight tactics,,,having known all about the 332 and the exploits and the way things were in 1944 not 12,,My father 48 missions b17,,command Radio op gunner,2nd Bmb grp ,15 af. escorted on occasion by the 332 as well as the other ftr groups of the 15th airforce,,who have received very little recognition or films..No one group won the air war.

Washington Post review was not good. Says it is cliche ridden, one dimensional in character development, with wooden dialog. On the good side, it says the action sequences are good, but CGI driven. -- Al

the hbo film of a few years ago is given quite the credit in comparison

I just heard an interview with George Lucas. He was saying that this film was over 20 years in the making, he had to finance all of it himself. When he had the product, he thought film studios would pony up the ad and marketing money but they wouldn't. Their attitude was that it's an all black action film without a white "action star" and they just didn't know who/how to reach and market it. Seriously. That is pathetic on every level.

I'm really happy it came out and am looking forward to seeing it.

Gideon..

If this is correct then I agree. Sad state of affairs. remembering what they did for their country in WWII seems to be the most important thing than trying to get a white star in a film about black pilots!!!.

The reality is, economics drives these decisions, not race. Hollywood, which I loathe personally, is about making money. If Hollywood believed the movie would generate profits with green people in it, they would make the movie tomorrow.

It has nothing to do with what the TA did or did not do for the. US. It's about whether the movie would sell tickets. Spike Lee made a mostly black WWII movie a few years back. I saw it. It wasnt bad, but not good either. I don't think it was a money maker. One strike and you're out in Hollywood.

Plus, frankly, watching yet another film in which white people behave badly toward backs because of racial feelings, well its a bit worn as.a morality lesson. We get it.

Rutledge..

I don't really think its a morality lesson is it?? I think its a history lesson for sure. If white people in that time behaved disgracefully towards fellow countrymen because they were black then it should be shown and, what I liked from the last TA film which, Al and I discussed was that this was shown and, done well.

If we look at race relations in the world and the US and UK maybe, your wrong, many don't get it and, many don't value or appreciate what our non white countrymen did in the wars of WWI and WWII. I think, it would be naive to believe, sadly, that race was not an issue in this film and its financial support.

There can be no doubt that they overcome appalling treatment and, were better pilots for it and, showed that in their flying record

Hi guys,

I have to agree with “Rutledge”… The success or failure of “Red Tails” has got a lot more to do with is it a good, bad or indifferent movie… not race!
I want to see the movie because I love WW2 movies in general and WW2 aircraft in particular.
Hollywood and the Movies are all about “Show Business” with the emphasis on the Business i.e. Will it make money? Will it put “bums on seats?” from all the reviews I’ve read so far “RED TAILS” has a lousy, cliché-ridden script and is so politically correct with our main heroes having very modern “attitude” to boot.
The aerial combat scenes look good but again are very obviously “computer generated” and from the trailers at least… a distinctly “Star Wars” look.
To be fair to Hollywood there have been many movies made where “race” has been a central feature “In The Heat Of The Night”… “Driving Miss Daisy”… “The Help” to name but a few. All of these movies were successful… all of them also had great scripts.
The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is a unique story… I’m not sure that this particular telling of their tale does them true justice!

Best wishes and happy flying.
Andy C.
