Remakes of Classics (1 Viewer)

A remake of "Zulu", and no roles for Pete Postelthwaite, or Sean Bean? Those are serious omissions! ;)

Prost!
Brad

Sean Bean= Hook.

Pete Postelthwaite=The non-present Clergyman or the Commisaryman.

Do you want to leave in the up-tight Clergyman's daughter?

Hugh Jackman would make a great Chard too. I would say Anne Hathaway or Kirsten Dunst as Miss Witt

I think Sean Bean would make a great Hook, as taking into consideration of Bean's performance as the irresponsible Borimir in LOTR, would make a great Hook that rises to heroism as Borimir did in LOTR.

I would also say for:
Mr. Witt-Ian McKellan or Christopher Lee either would be great
Hitch or Allen-Dominic Green
Surgeon Reynolds-Anthony Hopkins

I would say for Directing either:
Tom Hanks
Steven Spielberg
Clint Eastwood

I would also say The Searchers would make a great remake and here is who I would cast:
Ethan Edwards-Mel Gibson or Sam Elliot, I think Sam Elliot would be the best because Ethan seems to go more and more CRAZY as the film progresses and I think Sam Elliot would be able to portray this.
Martin Pawley-Matt Damon
Captain Clayton-Kevin Costner
Scar-West Studi
Debbie-Kierra Knightley

Take these into consideration, please feel to chide me for choosing actors you feel that are not upto the task

I think you should go watch the original a few more times.;):D

Sam Elliot would make a great CRAZY Ethan Edwards, come on Sgt. Major Plumely, "if any of you call me grandpa, I'll kill you." Come on who wasnt intimated of Elliots Plumely.

One of the things that annoys me is the predictability of the characters. A film depicting the actions of a squad or platoon will always have an overbearing commanding officer who insists on virtually impossible missions, a platoon commander who is concerned for his men, a tough sergeant, a womaniser, a pyscopath, a married man always looking at photos of his family, a comedian, a bully, a looter and, depending on period a token ethnic, either a negro or native American who is always picked on by the bully but who you know will give the bully his come uppance at some point. Add to this a nervous rookie and a decent young soldier who is always worried about the ethics of war and killing and, of course, some female who has to be inserted into the plot for some improbable reason. The rest of the unit are naturally just cannon fodder to be eliminated as necessary. Add gunfire and explosions, stir briskly and another potboiler is born.

I believe you're describing the movie "Stripes" from the early eighties. I think that what you describe may also be reality in most military units, even school, and life, in general. Mike

There was also a sketch on "Saturday Night Live" back in the 80's, when Eddie Murphy was still in the cast, that spoofed that movie cliche. There was the street-wise, fast-talking guy from Brooklyn, the Iowa farm boy, the black man (Eddie), and they were all trapped in a foxhole, and trying to figure out who was going to get killed first. If I remember, Eddie was agitated because "the black guy always gets killed first".

Same thing goes for horror movies. Anyone who is under 20, goes down in the basement, has sex or smokes pot is going to get hacked to pieces. And of course, that's the premise of spoofs like "Scary Movie".

That was even a line on "Family Guy", when Peter and James Woods were best friends, camping out in the back yard and telling ghost stories: "...the sweater was neatly folded on the grave, so he went back to the car, and the severed hook was still hanging on the car door, because the calls were coming from inside the house!"

What? Remake "The Searchers"? Has the world gone mad? Did I suddenly awake in Bizzaro land? No Duke, no Searchers. Thirty lashes with a wet noodle. JMHO. -- lancer

I agree! "The Searchers" was one of Duke's finest efforts and a great synergy between himself and John Ford. Let it alone, it is one of the greatest westerns ever. Besides the lead characters you can't replace the John Ford "stock players" Harry Carey, Jr, Ken Curtis, Hank Worden, etc. The movie was beautifully filmed and delightfully politically incorrect. Despite many people thinking of Wayne as a poor actor, he got so into character in this film that as filming progressed and Ethan became more stressed and racist other actors found Wayne surly and difficult - be became Ethan Edwards!

Trivia; Buddy Holly said that the song "That'll Be the Day" was inspired by Ethan Edwards' famous response line.

The Duke and John Ford, movies will never get any better. End of story. -- lancer

On the subject of remaking "Patton", I see this as about as difficult a casting job as you could pick. George Scott nailed this role and became Patton. Who could do it now? No one in current filmdom has the chops for this role and I can only envision disaster for such a project. -- lancer

Ow! please don't hit me with the noodle lancer,:( I only suggested my opinion of a remake, did I say that the Duke's performance was not good, no, I only said I would like to see another actors take on the role. Besides John Wayne was my hero as a kid.:D

you know Sam Elliot would make a great Ethan Edwards,
Vick:rolleyes::eek::cool::D

Hey Vick -- o.k., no noodle. Besides, I like Sam also. I just do not believe anyone can replace The Duke, especially in that particular role. It is a career definer. That said, there are plenty of actors who could take his place in "The Conqueror" should anyone want to remake that "classic". -- lancer
