Hi all,

I am ordering the Stalingrad wounded Russian next week, I have a perfect spot for him in a dio to be displayed but looks like the base (rock debris) he lays on maybe to big to place in the location, I may remove the soldier from the base{eek3} yea I know, I'm scared!!! I do not want to ruin a perfectly good figure but he would look really neat in this paticular dio, so curious to know if anyone has ever removed a figure from base before or have any suggestions??...Sammy

You can trim the base so it is smaller using a dremel tool. Or Matt may be able to get you a figure done without the base - it may be separate anyway during production. It looks like the figure is separate but it conforms to the shape mound of the base and would not be painted on the underside.

have any suggestions??...Sammy

Yes, get a new idea! {sm4}

I agree it looks like the fig is glued on to the mound & could in theory come off, but strikes me as too delicate. The base looks too meaty to cut with a dremel....I wouldn't want to do it. Maybe ask if there is a spare unmounted unpainted one collecting dust in the workshop.

Good luck with that Sammy. I think it would be hard to get right removing it yourself. I would ask F/L if they could do one without a base as well.

Chris.

I have not viewed the figure but you might, if you decide to go ahead with this, try removing as much as you can with a small hacksaw leaving a small buffer of material to be finished with a dremel and collection of various files.

I am looking at possibly removing the bases from several figures, drilling the feet for steel pins to mount them on some paving where I can not bury the bases to conceal them.

EEkkkk. not that hacksaw man!!!!:) thanks for the replys fellows, I'm not sure what I will do until I try the figure in the dio...Sammy

Sammy,

At $65 a pop that's not something I'd do. If you're even going to think about it, I'd have an expert toy soldier repairman do it.

The first thing you should do is email Matt. He can tell you 1) whether he has any without the base, painted or unpainted and 2) if not, how it is attached to the base, which will help guide your removal if necessary. I have had a number of FL figures modified by a professional and they came out as good or better than they started in all cases. That has included changing arms, legs, heads and even bodies. Your task here is much more simple but still a challenge depending on who does it. If it is only the size of the base that is the problem, I would think cutting the base rather than removing it is the best course. The only real risk is cost. There are several people out there than can fix these figures but you could end up paying double or more of the original cost.

Excellent Response{bravo}}....I completely agree with your post.....If its just a matter of "trimming the base" to get it to work, a dremel should be fine.(Slowly and Carefully).....Otherwise the figure will likely be ruined in trying to separate it completely.....Paying someone to modify the figure will likely not be a wise monetary choice.

Who is your professional and do you have pictures of the modifications?

Hello Sammy,
I just read your post concerning your problem. I think that remove a base is possible but not easy. It takes time and patience...
With figures, all is possible..
Below you will find a repair on russian hussars, the horse have the four legs broken (the front right in two parts and the same for back left).
I rebuild legs and provide a new paint (I used oil paint, the legs are a little shinny, pic taken just after painting work). A total of 8 hours of job to save this set..
The second was more easier.. only a horse tail broken.
All the best my friend!

I would not advise anything which involves cutting the base its the wrong route. These figures are usually held in place with small pegs so, a syringe with a very fine head and some glue debonder at the points attached and it will remove simply and with no fuss

good point. I never think of glue debonder because I never use cyanoacrylate glues. You should check with Matt first to see what kind of glue his shop uses. If they use cyanoacrylates, you could be in business

Hello Mike,
Thank! In the past, painted historical figures was my hobby... Sometimes, I pick up my pencils..
Cheers.

Well the surgery has been completed and both soldier and base came out of it fine:) I recieved my dead Russian today and went right to work at removing the base, using a very small sharp tool I gently placed it between the chest area and base connection and with a gentle push they seperated perfectly!! then I found out the soldier has two small metal pegs to the torso area that connect to the base so I actually can reattach him back to the base if I choose to perfectly, I placed him (without base) in a great spot in one of my dioramas, I will try and post some pics tommorow or Monday...Sammy

Hello Sammy,
Congratulations for these new acquisitions.
Thanks for your feedback concerning the possibility to remove the base from the dead russian, very interesting!
Best regards
Xavier

Congrats Sammy. Considering your line of work, it should have been a snap! ^&grin

I knew one of these days all that time on the block would pay off!! :) seriously I was very surprised how easy it was to separate the base from soldier, didn't even need the hack saw^&grin but I had made my mind up if it didn't budge with a little force I wasn't going to ruin this set, but just as I lifted the tool a little I felt a little give then did the same on the opposite side and "Pop" it was all done, no harm done to anything...Sammy
