Thoughts on repainting the TGM 005 and 006 Flak and Crew set to Afrika Corp. Would this be a legitmate item? I love the set, but mainly want to focus on the "Sands of Time" so to speak. Just curious as to some thoughts on whether this is historically accurate. I really like the 2 sets and want to keep them in my collection. The officer with the pipe is priceless!

Do you mean the Pak 38 sets? They came in Normandy (A) and Tropical (B) colours. I guess you don't have the Tropical sets?

The Pak 38 was in North Africa from early 1941 so one in desert camo is historically accurate.

Tom...

If you mean true DAK then it would not be accurate as these are FJ's otherwise it would be OK for the theatre of ops in general. Perhaps, if you want a true DAK piece you can order one of the upcoming anniversary sets which, have DAK crew

You mean use the old Pak 38 Tropical buy with the new DAK crew instead of the old Tropical crew?

Ramcke's Brigade (Falschirmjager - Brigade Afrika) were in North Afrika with Rommel from July 1942 so TGM005B and TGM006B could work. And Honour Bound did 2 sets of Ramcke's Brigade.

Like Terry pointed out there were German paras in Africa. They were first called Fallschirmjäger Brigade Africa, were renamed Fallschirmjäger Brigade Ramcke and later Luftwaffe Jäger-Brigade 1. They stayed in Africa until the end of hostilities in May 1943.

Hi,oh boy, let me reask as I didn't do a good job the first time.

Yes, PAK 38 sets TGM 5 and 6, I have in "Tropical". My question is can I use these in NOrth Afrika or should I have them repainted to the "Sand" color and if so, would that be historically ok?

Thanks, sorry for the confusion!

I would use the TGM sets to represent Ramke's Brigade in North Afrika. I think all of the clothing would have been in use during the North Afrika campaign. Repainting won't fix the helmets to look like Afrika Korps anyway - they are clearly Fallschirmjager. TGM probably meant them for places like Crete, Greece, Italy and Ukraine? But they could work for Ramcke in North Afrika.

The following is appropriate for Ramcke FJs wearing jump smocks in North Africa

  • Tropical trousers
  • Olive green jump smock
  • Splinter camo jump smock
  • Grey helmet
  • Grey helmet over sprayed with desert yellow paint
  • Helmet with splinter camo helmet cover
  • Leather and tropical belts and webbing

There was a tropical jump smock but it was extremely rare.

The figures in the 2 Pak 38 sets meet these criteria. Most have yellow FJ helmets; one looks to have a splinter camo helmet cover.
Most have splinter camo jump smock (one has an olive green jump smock)
All have tropical trousers.

So the figures are good to use as Ramcke Brigade in North Afrika.
