Hi Guys,

Often you see forum members replying to a post by including/quoting the whole contents of the post they are commenting upon in their response. Classic example is somebody responding to some posted pictures and including them again and saying something like nice pics. It means you have to scroll through them again.

It may be just me but I find it unnecessary and it clutters up the thread with repeats of the same thing.

IMHO{sm4}

Brett

I agree Brett and for those with slower connections it takes longer for them to download. There really is no need to quote the poster unless you are actually asking a question or referring to something specifically.

a personal pet peeve of mine...
I hate when people do that...
it gets confusing as to who posted the original picture if you don't pay attention...

I tend to agree-good idea! One question for Shannon+Peter- is it possible to make it so PMs don't automatically quote? I mean, I KNOW who I'm responding to, and what they said, because it is already right there^&grin.

I think I may know part of the problem.

When there is a particulary long page of threads the places to click "Reply to thread" are at the top and bottom of each page. If the point you are commenting on is in the middle of the page of threads then you have to scoll up or down to the "Reply to thread". However at the bottom of each post is the place to click "Reply with quote". Obviously many pick this one to reply with as it is the more convenient.

If I want to quote somebody I just copy and paste the bit I want and then carry on from there.

Possible solution would be to put a "reply to thread" in each post next to the "Reply with quote".

Brett

Some good points Brett , problem for me I can't copy and past when posting from my phone . But saying that I don't see what the big deal is quoting some one post I a member on lot of other forum and it never a problem and wonder what the big deal is , I can understand with photos but will play by the new rules

Hi Neil,
Not aware of any new rules. Was just making an observation.

I think it is most notable in the Show threads where someone posts a lot of pictures and somebody clicks the reply with quote and says thanks for the pics etc. This then repeats those photos again further down the thread. (which can be pages later). I don't have any issue with the reply with quotes to small posts.

Since I don't use a mobile phone for the internet I have no idea what happens when reading and posting from one. To me a mobile phone is still just a phone and I am a bit behind the times in this respect. If I feel the need to Google something then I have a wife and two kids with more advanced mobile phones than me.

Regards
Brett

I agree with your original post, Brett, it's not really necessary to include an entire post in a quote, unless it's pertinent to a person's response, and it's a little tedious if a post full of photos is repeated as a quote. I try to be careful about what I include in a quote post, as a matter of e-courtesy.

Prosit!
Brad

Always wondered why people did that.

Hello all

A very valid point which I am sure annoys many but as newbie here and only just started using a forum it looks like the only option to answer a post is with the Reply with Quote button at the bottom - if I am just being plain dumb or have simply missed something - please feel free to point me in the right direction.

Many thanks. JP (Mensaman)

Hi, JP,

You should also see a button marked "Reply to thread" at the left-hand side, below the last post in the thread.

Also, if you do click "Reply with quote" and don't want to use the quote, you can remove the quoted text in the text editor pane.

Hope that helps, prosit!

I'll follow up by saying that I'm not sure, off the top of my head, how much of this functionality is defined by our user profiles, too. I have to look at mine and refresh my memory. That is, on our profiles, there are some settings that we can define, that apply to all of our posting, private messaging, etc, so we don't have to define them all the time. Like allowing smilies, for example.

Hi Brad

I cannot see the Reply to Thread button on the left hand side the only choice I have is: Reply with Quotes (perhaps this is because I'm new here and have to post so many times before this becomes available) but as you can see I have taken your advice and just deleted all the text in this pane before replying.

Once again Many thanks. JP

That's one for the moderators, JP, I think there may be something not quite set up right for you.

I looked through my profile and didn't see any kind of flag that would enable or hide that button, but I think the mods and Shannon would be able to help out.

Glad to have helped with a workaround, in the meantime!

Prost!
Brad

You have to scroll to the bottom of the page JP and it on the bottom left hand side.

Hello the thebritfarmer

Thank you very much for the tip - it's 2.45 a.m. here and it was worth waiting up for. Once again my thanks. JP
