My endless winter diorama featuring the beleaguered French on the retreat after being chased out of Russia in 1812 is finally done! What I believe to be First Legions's finest ever figures and Tolstoy's War and Peace were the inspiration to produce the composition. At times I felt as if I was slogging through the frigid ice and snow right alongside the French as it was a battle to render the scene in my mind's eye. Everything you see in the photos is firmly affixed in place (no loose snow). I hope you enjoy the photos!

The best retreat from Russia diorama I have ever seen. I have seen much bigger ones with some really cool elements, but this is just fantastic. Love the composition.

Stunning! Thanks for sharing your superb work.

Joe...that is very cool...it gives me chills to look at the extreme frigid weather diorama you have created!
the frozen cannon pic is special!

Joe you've done it again, brilliant work. :salute:::salute::

Freezing my butt off just looking at it. Fantastic work!

That is a work of art! Is there a way to have a panoramic pic?{bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

Brilliant work, so well done....

I love the icy river, and the snow covered landscape, it's a true 'work of art'

Keep up the good work,
John

Amazing pictures. Superb.
Well done!
It’s inspiring me to dig out that copy of War And Peace and finally start it...

The frozen cannon was one of my favorite parts to work on Mike, and I'm happy to hear you enjoy that feature as well! In each diorama I make I try to include an element that extends past the borders of the diorama into the space between the composition and the viewer, and for this snapshot in time I used the frozen, destroyed cannon to achieve that. Thank you kindly, Joe

Really well done joe!!

Cheers Zach! There are more in the works...smaller ones that will move faster. Thanks! Joe

I had to get a scarf and mittens out just looking at it.

I was hoping it might have that effect Andreas! I wanted to create something as harsh and foreboding as I imagine it really was....fleeing in the bleak, black night with no time to rest - miserably freezing in the unforgiving environment. I wanted it to look so cold that you might feel a bit of frostbite sitting in if you look too long! :tongue: Thank you, Joe

Joe you've done it again, brilliant work. :salute:::salute::

Thank you so much Gebs! I'm so happy you like it! Your support is wonderful to have. Cheers, Joe

Freezing my butt off just looking at it. Fantastic work!

Right on Joe! You've confirmed that I achieved one of my goals when I commenced with this project....to depict the brutal presence of an angry mother nature. Thank you very much for your kind words, Joe

Very realistic! Well done!

Thank you Grog! I'm excited to read that you find it very realistic! I really wanted it to be perceived that way....a war torn wasteland caught in the grips of bitter, painfully numbing cold. With much appreciation, Joe

Mark

Mark, Thank you!!! Unfortunately I don't have equipment that can take a shot like that. I just have the lens that came with my old Canon rebel T2i.
I don't have any photo editing software either; these are raw unaltered images. The dio will be for sale though, so if you buy it you can shoot it panoramically. :smile2: Thank you so much for calling it a work of art! All the hours were very much worth it for such praise. Best, Joe

John, that's awesome that you enjoy the icy river and snow effects (and I'll note that there is no loose snow; everything is fixed in place). Thank you for bestowing the true work of art label on this! It means a lot especially coming from an artist such as yourself. Joe

Amazing pictures. Superb.
Well done!

Now this is really cool bridport, and quite rewarding to hear....the fact that you enjoy the diorama so much that you are going to read War and Peace is really energizing! Thank you for sharing that.:smile2: The inspiration to make this piece came from FL's brilliant figures and from War and Peace. All of these wonderful comments just add to my motivation to commence with future planned compositions. Cheers, Joe

Absolutely brilliant :salute:::salute:::salute::

Congratulations on a really excellent presentation of your diorama. Something that will make it into public viewing sometime so others outside the forum will get to enjoy and be amazed by it.
