Nancy Wake died on Sunday. Born in NZ and raised in Australia.

A few stories about about on the radio today.

When asked what her biggest regret was she replied "not killing more Nazis".

Prior to her going into a retirement home she was living in a London Hotel. A journalist who interviewed her there later discovered she could not pay her bills but the hotel did not know what to do with her. Apparently Prince Charles stepped in and paid her outstanding bills and found a retirement home for her. Nancy was a friend of the Queen Mother who also liked a drink at the Hotel bar where Nancy hung out.

She was once quoted as saying that she was going to die as Australia's most highly decorated female who never received an Australian award. As a member of the Resistance she was not part of the Australian Forces in WWII and did not receive any Australian award until 2004. She received the George Medal from UK, Legion of Honour from France and Medal of Freedom from USA.

However the fact she was the Gestapo's most wanted person is in my view her greatest acheivment.

She is one of the people who earned the appellation "the greatest generation." The world is a lesser place for her passing. And I'm with rich on preferring a figure of an Allied hero like Nancy Wake over more LAH personalities.
