Hi Guys, I just read "Village Horse's" estimate of how long it took Gordon to build, paint and landscape the "Fortified Manor House" we've all been enjoying over the last few days....an incredible "40 hours" or let's just say 1x working week and at just $50 an hour!!! Is that a bargain or what!?! Now if Robin, who's also a pretty good Dio maker in his own right can do it all in that time... at that price...and to the same quality and standard then I am positive that there is a job for him in Hong Kong! Gordon and yours truly would welcome him with open arms.

All the best and back to the salt-mines!

Now I am nowhere near the standard of what Gordon does and can do....but I have been involved in making a few buildings and large dioramas and if measured by time at $50 an hour no one could afford them! any way it is always about the pleasure one gets from making things.....keep having fun I say, it's priceless. :wink2:

I can't touch Gordon's work...not even come close to it...so this is a totally unfair comparison...but I get third world slave labor wages if configured on an hourly basis for the amount of time I put into a project...^&grin...

but for me...it's a labor of love...I really enjoy the modeling aspect of this hobby...but again...the things I make...any average modeler can make...the things Gordon makes...very few people can do...

Gordon's work is so spectacular...I would work for free as a "gopher" for him just to watch and learn his techniques...I'm still hopinig Andy might set up a few tutorials on modeling at the San Antonio show sometime in the future...I would attend everyone if he did...

the amount of detail on every square inch of his latest model is staggering...it is about as realistic as anything possible...I have no idea how much time he spent on it...but this piece is a work of art...definitely museum showcase quality...

whoever gets this piece...will have one of the best detailed structures I have ever seen...

Gents,

Read all the posts and re-post on the diorama that Gordon has made and I agree with my main man Mr. Mike "Mamacita on my Arm" Miller, that it is a priceless labor of love. There is no way to "clock" in and out on a project. One architectural 4x4 foot 1/25 scale water park pool I built took 45 days total. The hours in those days cannot be counted because they are endless.

THAT is why I can only afford to buy K&C figures and work on Mike Millers estate as a day laborer cutting grass, bushes and palm trees in exchange for his talents. And yes I still have to pay a retainer fee and materials. Also, when you go to Mike Miller's studio his assistant informs you "not to make eye contact" with the artists...as it ruins the zen-dio mood.

John...don't know where you disappeared to recently...but I have missed your posts...and I bet I couldn't afford your services...you are what is referred to as a "high roller"...

I'm down here eating government cheese and hot dogs on rare occassions...even the seaweed is starting to look good to me...

the "zen dio mood"...^&grin

With all the research and design it probably takes more than 40 hours. And for a unique model by Gordon, there are more than a few rich collectors who will pay many times the production cost. The only problem would be if Gordon realizes he's being paid in HK$ and Andy is selling the model for US$. ^&grin

It all depends on how fast you can realize a project,

If your slow than 50$/hour is not enough to make money.

If your fast than 50$/hour is a decent price to make profits.

Also when their is almost non competition like Gordon doing, then the price is normally x4 the normal price.

So even if Gordon can do it in 40 hours, he wont sell his product at normal price.

Based on this building which is just as good, newly purchased at $1390, someone is doing it wrong. Now take on a new respect for my wife who is a professional stressed to the max school teacher on $35 an hour. Robin. ps never built any diorama, just throw money at them.

Wonderful building and figures Robin, out of interest who made the farm house?

Hmmmm, I see you have increased the profit margin at JG Robin. Bob and I have talked about doing 'Hougoumont' for a Waterloo Dio at the college, I think we can give it a good nudge but no-one will pay us $50 an hour ......BUMMER! :wink2:^&grin
Wayne.

For the price you can't beat those JG buildings, no ifs and or buts.

Can't compare a one off scratch built building to a production piece from a manufacturer, it's apples to hand grenades.

JG's hougomont is a beautiful piece for sure, but you'd be paying a lot more for one from John if he made you a hougomont from scratch.

Again, his building is beautiful for sure, stunning really.............

.............
The apples is that I've still got $10,000± in my bank account. Hand grenades,
it is in someone else's bank account. Apples are good for you. Hand grenades,
not so much. And bragging rights in a small select sect mean nothing once you
leave the room.{sm4}

That is quite true. Given my druthers, I would go with Gordon's. Trouble is, we don't always get our druthers, do we? :wink2:

The Huguemont buildings are not exactly production pieces because they are only made to order and there's a six week lag time so it's more like a cross between a scratch and production piece.

The price tag would dictate that, can't imagine John would have ten of those sitting in his inventory, it's a smart idea to do them as a made to order piece vs something sitting on the shelf waiting to ship out..................

Yeah.....................anyway not sure what this means to be honest.

There's that druthers thing getting in the way again :wink2:
