Guys...

Just watched Ronin again this morning on SKY. This IMO has to be the greatest set of car chases and stunts in any film ever. The usual good ones spring to min d like Bullitt but, this is bettered by Ronin.

Any suggestions that can beat this??
Mitch

Yes have to agree that one in Ronin is awesome. I like the one in the French Connection or the start of the Bond movie I believe its in "The World is Not Enough" where it takes place in that rock quarry.

Keep it Silly

MCKENNA..

Forgot about the french connection great for its time.

Sorry guys, but as good as they may be, no one holds a candle to Bullitt with Steve McQueen. You feel like you're right in the car with him. By the way, he did his own stunts.

I also liked his bike riding in the great escape but, for all its a good chase the audi/BMW even the peugot were superb in Ronin and just take it for me. You get the same sense of being in the car in Ronin and the fact that its rather small streets than the large US ones and open freeway

Ronin or Bullitt. Six of one, half dozen of the other. Both outstanding movies and unsurpassed action car chases. I will say, that on the big screen or small TV, Bullitt is the only chase sequence that has made my stomach rise into my throat, as they went down the hills.^&grin -- Al

Well, there you go. That's why it's the best.

Checked a few sites. Couple rate Ronin number 1 but most tend to pick Bullitt. All personal preference of course.

I must have seen Bullitt 70 or 80 times. I was an usher when the movie first came out so I saw it about 40 times in the movie theatre. Anytime it shows up on Tv, I'm glued to it. Not just a great chase scene but a very good story and great acting by McQueen, Robert Vaughn, not to mention Jacqueline Bisset and a small appearance by Robert Duvall as a cab driver. Great score as well

I agree these are great, but I think you have to include the chase in Pairs the Bourne Identity and the cab chase in the Bourne Ultimatum -multiple crashes, wrong-way driving, MC crashes - all the good stuff. All the Bourne movies are great chase movies, IMO.

Great choices also Ronin sort of set the modern bench mark as did Bullitt but, I had forgotten how good these were also.

Watching Ronin right now, on cable. What a great movie. So much subtle detail. Gotta go, time for the car chase. DeNiro and the boys just set up the ambush.^&grin -- Al

I would have to say Bullitt,,the Mustang finally located after years of searching by the crazed community,,where else can a beautiful black 440 68 Charger lose 14 hubcaps and still roll on,,and of course actual driving by Mcqueen part of the time.
Bromhead,, A prejudiced owner of a 1970 Shelby clone

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Movie, The Seven-Ups. A classic 1970's NYPD movie with Roy Scheider. Has an OUTSTANDING chase scene with a GREAT ending to the chase.
Also has the same producer as The French Connection and Bullet. If you haven't SEEN this movie, you MUST put this on your must see list.

Good catch. Had completely forgotten this movie. It is a good one. Great car chase. -- Al

Of course he did; Steve, like Paul Newman, actually did race at a very high level. You can check out more impressive driving by each in Le Mans and Winning respectively. I very much enjoy watching both of these. As much as I like James Garner, it is a pity to me one of the two of them did not also do Grand Prix.

Sorry Brad but attempting to chose between the Bullitt and Ronin chase scenes is an exercise in futility. They are both classics and they can both cause my stomach to flip, which is saying something for an ex fighter jock. One thing they both did very well was to capture the tension of the drivers and passengers. In Ronin, that was achieved by filming the real actors in the cars while the stunt drivers (all grand prix level) did the runs. So when you see those expressions of fear and disbelief, they were quite real. Others have tried to imitate but none have quite reached the level of these two IMHO. Which is better is simply irrelevant to me since I have both of Blu-ray and enjoy each of them often.:wink2:

Mcqueen did some of the driving but due to pressure from the studio ,contract etc a good friend,,stunt driver, did most of the driving in the scenes,,he did assist in setting up the two mustangs used,,the chassis,,suspension of the fastback far superior to that of the 440 Charger as shown in the chase, kudos to the dodge losing 14 hubcaps and still rolling,,another bit of trivia as the Mustang burns rubber in reverse then upshifting up the hill laying a single streak of rubber indicating a non positraction rear axle,,My 1970 Shelby clone will burn out in first and break loose in 2nd due to a shift kit installed,,as my parents told me "you will outgrow this car crap after you graduate", I did and I shall some day,,Meanwhile I have just installed a new Holly 4barrell double pumper on my modified 55 Tbird to celebrate the latest oil crisis.

Definately Ronin, just pales Bullit into obscurity. Just watched them again and the bourne trilogy and Ronin stomps all over those also. Certainly not an exercise in futility as watching them and deciding was interesting and, fun!!

All true. What exactly is your 1970 Shelby clone? I had a 1968 Shelby GT350 that would burn in 1st, 2nd and 3rd until it was totaled by my roommate. What a great sound those cars had; well for that matter what great cars they were.;) My Jag turbo is of course much faster but still I long for those days.
