RUSSIANS !! The Battle is LOST before it has begun ! (3 Viewers)

He may have I don't know...actually I think you are right....Wellington observed these actions by his men and this is when he referred to them as scum of the earth (perhaps he was referring to the bad apples and not his entire army) ....I think that a General lets his men attack innocent civillians should be commended....not sure if these men who were klled hurt or killed innocent people but if they had and they were in my army they would have met the same fate by me.

Sorry Ron,this thread has drifted somewhat.Very nice collection by the way.

How can any honorable General allow his men to intentionally hurt civillians...the soldiers of today who have been caught have been put in jail....during the Napoleonic wars execution was a comman thing...infact in WW2 this type of thing went on for lesser things such as desertion.

WELLINGTON

Very true.It is a stain on any army who commited such acts. There can be no excuse for the murder of innocent civilians. Some argue that men suffering from shock do not know what they are doing,i do not have medical knowledge so can't really comment on that. But the whole issue of civilians is so difficult, did all the civilians who were killed from the air in British,German and French cities deserve to die?.

Rob

It has always been interesting to me that when british allies speak of NAPOLEON it always falls around 1) Russia campaign & 2) Waterloo

There were several years upon years of Victories that never seem to make it into the discussion ? Hmmmm.....Wonder if thats why it is called....wait for it.....

THE NAPOLEONIC PERIOD !

:D :D :D

Just having a go at your, Cap.

I tend towards a British preference to be sure but I won't deny Napoleon's genius in warfare. Perhaps the greatest testament to Napoleon's personality and accomplishments is that he is - almost two hundred years after his death - endlessly studied, argued over, loved and hated in equal measure.

Two things. Rob Badajoz is pronounouced with a "y" instead of a "j". Bad-a-yos. Easy right?

Didn't someone name a town or two after Wellington!

You guys are forgetting someone wait for it........

Wellington

If we were to write down all the British Empire faults - it would take three forums to complete - pleassseeee

The british love to lay the blame of defeat a the feet of Napoleon - actually if you studied the period - all the critical mistakes were made by NEY during the 100 Days - you could also look to a couple of Napoleon's other Generals for lack of fighting spirit as well. Napoleon was not just a General - He was an Emperuer ! He had more things on his plate than just the battle before him - this moves him above other Generals of the time and actually throughout HISTORY.

Napoleon had the entire Royality and Empires of Europe against him - on the battlefield and in the backrooms of politics of Paris - Napoleon was always fighting a two front war. I am not trying to say this justifies leaving your men in the field - but, I do believe we look at this period through a PRO-BRITISH view (victors write the history) and do not take in all the other political problems that Napoleon faced.

For a guy who took on the WHOLE OF EUROPE - he didnt do too bad.

I highly doubt that ENGLAND could have lasted that long if she was on the mainland of Europe and had to face all the enemies that NAPOLEON had to face.

Ron

I wouldn't blam it all on NEY, it was Napoleon who put him in this position to start with.....only my opinion but maybe some of the mistakes Napoleon made were easily blamed on Ney....in some ways Ney has been shafted with all the errors made....

I have to admit that there is one thing that really bothers me about Napoleon....he was known for leaving his men behind when things got bad costing them their lives while Napoleon would head back to France and report his successes to the French government when it wasn't true......The French troops of Napoleons army were expert veterens who LOVED and trusted Napoleon....I don't know how a general could do this to the men who would follow him into hell and back.

This happened more than once...and in my opinion only to make himself look good while his army suffered at his decision making.

Guys! a few posts back we had all reached an agreement!! Don't make me send in my heavy cavalry!!!

Rob

I do hope you two have enjoyed this diversion. Now shake hands and say Sharpe!

Seriously, I hope you all are not getting your feathers ruffled. Your plumes will look a sight!

Am I correct in saying that he lost almost all his wars? (Egypt campaign, Spain campaign, Russia campaign and France campaign)

Am I correct in saying that he deserted his army five times? (Egypt, Spain, Russia, Leipzig and Waterloo)

Pierre.

That will be probably the same with Hitler

I guess it will be de bon goût, in two hundred years, to write his name in big blue bolded letters

Pierre.

Ron....I can't be bothered anymore...

WELLINGTON

RETREAT ? :D

Hey, I am enjoying the back and forth - the Napoleonic period is fun to discuss and talk about "what if" - Wellington has his passion and I have mine - but, we both agree....

KING & COUNTRY NEEDS TO MAKE MORE NAPOLEONIC FIGURES !!

:D :D :D

Can someone explain to me.Are we saying Napoleon deserted his men after all those battles, really???????

Rob

NO - Youre wrong - you are taking a few moments in history covering 20 years to prove your sarcastic point.

I am proud of you - you have finally learned to BAIT your opponent without attacking him. ;)

A quality that Napoleon knew so well.
