Tom, my daughter-in-law is a dog trainer . . . in fact, that's how they ended up with Duval when she was training him for the other family. However, a short time into the training the other family decided he was too much for them. My son and daughter-in-law also have a 130 pound King Shepard (Hexe) which is very well trained and is like a big teddy bear. Duval is just too high spirited and protective as far as I am concerned.

Mike...Tom has had success with his...but again...I don't think the Belgian breed would make an overall good pet with children...more simply said...I would not be comfortable with one around my children or friends/strangers in the house...

WOW, it sounds like it, well you never know, hopefully patience pays off! Dogs can be weird prior to the age of 2 and then something of normalcy somehow snaps, although, this one really does sound like a handful and I hope you hand heals!!

well, while this thread is going, here is a quick snap of 2 of my passed sheps - Rebel and Duke and then 2 current shots of the old guy Nero. His ears about 4 years ago got an infection and they went from pinpoint straight to floppy!! Amazing still for his age. I have always found it amazing too how they all will pose seated! I don't have a photo of Nero in his prime, but not sure if you can tell how large he is. The Belgian Duke was the smallest at 85 pounds but by far the most protective! and the first one pictured was 105lbs, as I said before imagine Dino from the Flintstones fame!

that's a good looking crew Tom...they all look smart and attentive...

Thanks! They were/are all unique for sure. I will have to look for a photo of Brutus the dwarf, he was something, big head, little legs, big paws! He was my childhood dog, I never will forget practicing the 4th grade Julius Caesar speech with him as the audience - "Et Tu Brute". :)

Side note, the worst part regarding the large dogs is the shorter life span of 8-11, it is too short, my first one being a dwarf lasted 16.5 years, which was a real gift.

I really didn't tell our story completely...after Duke and Debbie Dog (dachshund) mangled Ducky Lucky...mostly Duke I'm sure...I told you my father tried the police department for adoption...after they declined...my father gave him to someone 4-5 miles away...about 2 weeks later...Duke somehow found his way back home amazingly...and my father didn't have the heart to give him away again...so we kept him...he was a loyal, lovable, protective dog til he passed away...he was cautious of strangers to the point of growling if he felt one of us was in a confrontation...but never bit a human to the best of my knowledge...he was spoiled rotten...treated with "people food" often and slept in my bed at my feet...he was a big clumsy dog that would step all over you when we played...Duke was not a Belgian Malonois...
