Scalping (1 Viewer)

Yeah Marco,

This is bringing up the whole statue debate which I got mixed feelings on. Don't get me wrong I neither a statue protestor and "everything it stands for" nor a "keep 'em up" type of supporter. I dig statues from an historical and artistic stand point and am sad to see them ripped down like Saddam's statue in Baghdad. I mean, that is skipping the entire process of going though the elected officials and making a vote on it. That ain't cool. Further, if you got a beef with a monument or traffic signal you take it to city council, make your case and hopefully you win the support of the public. But, to just go all Anarchy on statues is not cool.

For all his chaos, ole Trump did make a good point when he said "whats next and when does it stop". Yeah man, you just can't start ripping up statues because of skeletons in the closet. Those guys lived in a different era and are a product of their time and how we celebrate or condemn them is left up to us as citizens of our nation (s). I believe that there should be some sort of place for (unwanted) statues to be displayed like at the Gettysburg museum or something. IF, they are voted by the public to be removed and I am only talking about controversial civil war figures of statues. Now as far as the "Scalping" statue...man I just don't know...but uh respect to the Native Americans.

I recently read that my Alma Mater UT Austin removed some statues on the west lawn in response to the Charlotte protest. Good move I guess so that there are not protests at the campus and no one in harms way. But, I walked by those dudes and because of them I was able to study their place in history and make up my own mind if they were wankers or not. I was not mad they were there, but since this has become a national debate...sure I agree that maybe someone else's representation could be memorialized instead of Texas Governor Jim "Boss" Hogg.

So, I am torn on the issue and frankly don't really pay it much mind (other than these few paragraphs), but just hope that it does not turn into a fleecing of history. On a funny note, God know what kind of statue Trump will want we he done! Good lawd...

I really didn't post this because of the statues but there has always been debate over who began the scalping. As far as the statues go taking them down doesn't change the past. I've always thought as far as teaching history the schools whitewashed it but it's kind of hard to explain the real history to 5-6 year olds.

Statues shouldn't be destroyed.A lot of time and work went into making them. Whether you like a certain statue or not. To me books and works of art should never be destroyed. The people who put the southern statues up had a right to their opinion also.

The whole rewriting the past has even reached down here now, with idiots petitioning to remove historic statures and other such monuments representing historic events from long ago.

Global insanity.Must be the radiation from North Korea's nuclear tests.

Interesting article but removing a statue is a kin to the ancient Egyptians carving the name of a deposed king or queen out of the recordbto erase them from memory. Doesn't make what occurred go away it merely makes it more likely that we will repeat mistakes from the past again...

If you don't like a statue ignore it and move on with your life.

They tried the same thing with Cecil Rhodes statue in Oxford.....didn't work though ^&grin :salute::

......but they removed the statue at University of Cape Town, South Africa

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodes_Must_Fall

They chanted "One Settler, One Bullet"

On 8 April 2015 protesters disrupted the UCT Council meeting which had been called to discuss the removal of the statue and prevented members of the Council from leaving. According to a statement issued by Max Price, Vice-Chancellor of UCT, protesters chanted "One Settler, One Bullet", a rallying cry during apartheid, both at the meeting and the following day during the removal of the statue. On Tuesday 14 April 2015, Rhodes Must Fall issued a statement from its official Facebook page calling on its members to join a protest in the parking lot of the Bremner Building which ended with the slogan "ONE BULLET, ONE SETTLER!"

Cheers

Martyn:)
