I wonder whether First Legion will ever do the Greys. I know they've been done by King and Country, but I don't think anyone has ever done them in a way remotely like Lady Butler's version.

I remember seeing her painting for the first time. It really got me interested in the Napoleonic period.

If First Legion did a set based on that painting, I certainly would get the set.

Derek Cross from All The Queens Men (AQM Toy Soldiers) made a limited edition of 200 sets of the Scots Greys Charge as in the Lady Butler painting.
18 pieces, and the figures were pinned to fit in a diorama base.
I have a small photo attached from the AQM website (last updated sometime in 2007 though).
However, the Scots Greys after Lady Butler would be a sight to see made by First Legion. I think that's a great suggestion.

Hi

Have you seen, king and countrys set of the famous 2nd North British Dragoons ( Scot greys ) from the Union brigade at Waterloo ?.

I have a few photo's of the figures in my collection and dioramas I've created over the years.
I think it will only be a matter of time before they design and release a set of there own.... And i can't wait:D:D

I hope you like them.

Yes I have seen them and I have one of them.

You have certainly done an excellent job of displaying them.

I suppose the only weakness IMHO is the animation of the horses.

I think First Legion have really excelled themselves with the sculpting and painting of their horses and I can only imagine (salivate) over what they might be able to do with the theme.

Thanks for bringing back a great childhood memory; my aunt bought me the Horizon Caravel book on Waterloo (I've still got it) and on the cover is the famous painting, it's also shown within the book as well. A terrific piece of art.

I was always hoping as a kid that Airfix would do the Greys within their Waterloo ho/oo range, but they never did....

Thanks for posting that Konrad, what a terrific set that is; there are several Uk based toy soldier companies that do superb work, it's too bad there are no representatives for them in the states as these figures would be a big hit over here IMO.

This is one of the main reasons why I will be attending the London Show at some point, to see some of these treasures in person (that and being in London, a nice side benefit of the show as well..............).

Mark,
Thanks for sharing those photos, you've done a superb job with that diorama, excellent work for sure. Love those mats too, they are terrific and really bring displays to life................

That is indeed a very fine set of displays.

Few military miniature companies, including the Russians, do horses correctly, especially in this scale. FL has shown itself to be the best in this regard, as in others. For whatever reason, this K&C mounted range is not up to the standard of their French Cuirassiers but I have no doubt that when FL does the Greys they will be impressive. I hope we see one of the other Heavy Dragoon regiments and the Cuirassiers first however.

I think this is the book that you are referring to.

The Battle of Waterloo by J. Christopher Herrold.

Horizon Caravel Books. 1st Edition 1967.

I have a copy too. Very easy reading.

Best Wishes, Raymond.

Beautiful diorama. I too would like to see First Legion take a whack at the Grays sometime down the road.

No one else does mounted figures like First Legion. If they did tackle the Greys, it would be the best effort we have seen from any company.

Bill,
Not to go too deeply into this but what is some of the worst mistakes companies do when they make their horses?

OK Mark but let me keep it generic here for peace and harmony.;) Probably the most frequent mistake is in the horse's expression. It is very common to see most incongruous mouths, ears and eyes for the situation or even consistency. Also there is the near universal showing of gapping mouths and bared teeth. Horses do both but not nearly as frequently as shown and again seldom in the situations they are frequently shown, as in almost all charges. Also the leg positions are often wrong for the gate of the horse the pose is attempting to show. In fact horses are very nimble creatures and can do non standard things with their feet but again, not nearly to the degree shown. Then there are issues with proportions of and even shapes or head, necks, bodies and legs. While more variation here is acceptable, many heads, eyes and mouths are poorly shaped. Rounding out the common equine modeling errors are mistakes in color, most often in the shading between dark and light areas and most greys are really not done with the variation they naturally have. I have commented here on some particular figure issues as I have seen them posted from time to time but I usually don't bother unless I find the error particularly troublesome.

Thank you Bill and thank you for keeping generic.:)

I remember Matt saying he would do the Grey's but that they would be doing some other British Heavy first :). The Painting from Felix Philippoteaux of the Cuirassiers charging the Highlanders at Waterloo is what got me started a long time ago. I'd like to have FL do both these beauty's:D All the best Gebhard

Thanks for pointing that out, that is one of my favorite all time paintings, remember that one too from my childhood, it was my cousins favorite as a kid so I bought him a framed copy to hang in his mancave for his birthday several years ago, the look on his wifes face when he tore off the wrapping paper was priceless.

I thought she was going to grab the painting and smash it over our heads..................

Gebhard, That painting had the same effect on me as a 7th grader when I found David Howarth's book " Waterloo Day of Battle" at the school library.Have a beautiful framed print over the fireplace as well as Lady Butler's " Scotland Forever" here in the family room. I still marvel at the detail and at some point in the not too distant future hope to recreate the scene in miniature.Been holding out for First Legion Cuirassier's ! I have somewhere around 40 assorted metal Cuirassier , various makers, various quality , all nice and suitable. Afraid they'll be assigned as Rear ranker background troops
once the FL are available.
Scot's Grey's?Highlanders? Yes, Can't resist.
