Around 286 AD, Diocletian divided the Roman empire into four district administrative entities. The west had capital cities in Milan and Trier, with the east finally settling on Constantinople as its capital. When the Roman Empire in the west collapsed, the territory in the east continued for another thousand years until the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453.
Constantinople was a city designed for defence, it formed a triangular shape with 2 sides on water and the 3rd on the land side. Over time the city was considerably fortified and it withstood multiple sieges during its history, its walls once being breached by the 4th Crusaders in 1204 and then finally by the Turks as previously mentioned. The Romans in the east became popularly known as the Byzantines and were renowned for the beautiful artwork in their churches and opulent clothing. There was a strong tie with the Pope in Rome which worked for and also against the Byzantines.
Our first 3 Byzantines will feature an imperial guardsman, Heraclius the Emperor who defeated the Persians at Nineveh and a Byzantine officer, all of these will be suitable for the 7th century era. More Byzantines to follow later in the year as well as some Persians, as we expand this exciting offshoot range of our Romans. Unfortunately we only have the imperial guardsman available this month, but he sure does give a taste of things to come.

ROM BYZ 001A Imperial Guardsman with chi ro symbol on shield with red background. This emblem is still seen as a popular Christian symbol to this day.
ROM BYZ 001B Imperial Guardsman with green shield and chi ro symbol.
Both the above limited to 100 pieces and priced at $55/£45 each.

The Japanese RS troops released last month have sold very well with only a few remaining. RS053 Sentry figure has now all gone but our factory are sending a spare 20 or so figures that were spare from the last production run. If you are interested in some please let us know. A new B version of the sentry with helmet is due out next month for those of you who miss out on the soft cap version.

Other news: Our third batch of elephants has arrived with the fourth and final round arriving in October, giving a total of 200 pieces. A new elephant is in the works and we are planning for it to be suitable for the Roman era, the Punic wars and also the Greek wars of Alexander, hopefully something for everyone!
Other ground troops for ALL the above eras are planned to accompany our elephant.
Our Testudo has sold very well and we will be introducing replacement personality figures which will allow you to expand or add different figures to your formation as you see fit.
Our Celt chariot is now in the final stages of completion and we hope to have these available in November if not before, but definitely in time for Christmas.

Next month sees some more Persians for the SPA series, Medieval Knights as well as the emperor Xerxes. As a little sneak peek for next month we have included a picture of Frederick Barbarossa, one of our personality figures from the new Medieval series due out soon.

That’s it for this month, if you no longer wish to receive this newsletter please reply typing UNSUBSCRIBE in capitals and we will remove you from our mailing list. For those of you going to Chicago have a great time, hopefully we will make it at some point in time!

Best wishes The Gunn Team

Apologies if some of the pictures do not appear in order, its our first attempt to post so many pictures since Wayne took a break from the forum. If anybody requires more pictures posting with the titles underneath just message us here and we will post again for clarification!

Great looking shields on the Greeks

The Roman range goes from strength to strength.

On the medieval range will you be doing Agincourt period English long bowmen?

Thanks

Yes that is the plan plus various other figures from the 1st Crusade all the way up to the Battle of Bosworth.

Yes I'll be adding some more Romans to my collection. The General figure bears a passing similarity to busts of Titus !

Some truly stunning pieces this month!! Congratulations to TGM for another fine month of sword and sandals!! :) The Byzantines look very stunning and I look forward to everyone's dioramas with them.

Over the Labor Day holiday I built a 4'x4' square table to simulate the Roman port of Mogontiacum (present day Mainz). I am planning on doing a formation of Praetorians on the interior of the Fortified Fort- these new Praetorians will fall in the ranks quite nicely. In addition the Spartan with the spear will be bought up in multiples- extremely useful figure.

A couple concerns I do have- Roman Legionnaires marching with the Pilum out horizontally without cover on the point of the pilum seems unrealistic. My understanding is that in march formation the Pilum was held vertically. Having the pilum held horizontally without cover seems dangerous to the squaddie in front of you! {sm2}. Even as advanced as Roman military medicine was, a careless squaddie who nicks another squaddie could get the guy infected and that could potentially disrupt the fighting strength of the unit. Blades/spear points etc seem to be brazenly brandished lately with a lot of the "camp life" style figures without some thought as to whether or not it would seem very practical.

Lots of "Officers directing troops" with swords- with a Roman, why not use the same pose but with the Vitis staff?

Have you guys considered doing a Spartan phalanx similar to what FL currently has in the offering with their Macedonians (or East of India did some time back)? This seems a glaring gap for all Sword and Sandals manufacturer's these days.

Again, congratulations on another fantastic batch of Sword and Sandals figures. These guys will be a huge hit!!!

Hi Chris
The new ROM001 figure variant are marching into battle and hence no cover on spear tip. We did make a second rank with spear off to the side ever so slightly (ROM043) and need to make some more as these are great for the second rank but have sold out a while back. However to be honest these new ROM001 figures can also be used for second, third or fourth rank as the spear will fit down the side of the guy in front no problem.
We have a new Optio figure with Staff coming soon, point taken though about more command figures using them as it makes a nice alternative.
Will post pictures of Spartan Phalanx as and when they become available.
Best wishes The Gunn Team

I gotta say TG, so many of your figures are modeled directly from Aeroart figures. What's up with that?? It's been happening again and again.
I think I'll put together a pictorial essay to illustrate my claim.

Joe

Joe

Joe if any our figures resemble Aeroart in terms of paint quality then we will take that as a compliment. A lot of our master samples are now painted in Russia, if Aeroart use the same studio then I cannot comment on this.
I know none of our figures resemble Aeroart with regards to pose and each one is unique in this way. Saying that the human body only has so many ways of firing a rifle or throwing a spear and therefore in that respect there maybe some similarity, but that could be said for any manufacturers offerings.
I can pretty much guarantee that when we make a Templar Knight in the future he is going to look similar clothing and paint wise to any one currently on offer from Aeroart, K&C and FL but I am pretty sure none of them are going to claim exclusivity with regards to Templar Knights clothing or attire. After all before these manufacturers there were plenty of other manufacturers making Templar Knights. However I am very confident that none of our Templars will look similar with regards to pose as afore mentioned manufacturers, in fact I would go so far as to say they will be radically different in this respect.
With regards to Aeroart several of their figures resemble model kits on offer from Pegaso albeit in a different scale. I am pretty sure Pegaso had these models out before Aeroart, but who is to say the Pegaso one is unique and was not inspired elsewhere?
If a manufacturer makes a figure based on a painting or photograph then said manufacturer cannot claim exclusivity were somebody else to make it at a future date.
We have a Napoleonic figure coming out very soon based on a painting, we already know its been made in kit format before, but just because somebody else made it in a kit does not mean we cannot make it. Similarly if K&C or FL make the same figure later on we cannot complain they copied our design. After all if anybody has the copyright its the painter - who has long since died!
Where possible we now try to avoid making the same products as other manufacturers as our sales are much more buoyant when we do this. However being relative new comers to the market its pretty much a guarantee that somebody will have made a similar product, particularly the Romans or the Spartans before us at some point in time.

Hope this helps and thanks for your comments
