Hi All,

Again I couldn't find a specific thread to this old movie, although there are various reference to it in John Ford's /John Wayne and various US Cavalry figure threads.

Viewed it last night. I vaguely remember seeing this when I was a very little kid. I understand that this belonged to John Ford's famous trilogy with John Wayne.

It's not a bad movie, probably more entertaining to me than Lives of a Bengal Lancer. Really, it's a John Wayne vehicle all the way. The colours are just Kodak fantastic, and the best scene has to be the slow retreat across the plains with thunder and lightning in the background.

I really like alot of them, and this is one of them that I have in my movie collection.

I really like all 3 of these movies, as I do any Ford/Wayne collaboration. My favorite has always been Fort Apache over the other two, mainly because of Fonda's performance. -- Al

The other 2 are ny favorites for the sentimentality, ( the 3 troopers protecting Maureen Ohara in Rio Grande ), (the burial of the former Confederate General in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon) etc. I also enjoyed the realism and subdued grittiness of these 2 over Fort Apache. I felt like I was an actual trooper, underpaid, saddle worn, and mostly unremarkable except for their oath to serve..Another good cavalry pic or 2 ..Ulzanas Raid and Cheyanne Autumn..Michael

Always thought Ulzana's Raid was one of the best movies of the genre. Realistic all the way. The problem is finding the original, uncut version to watch. Even the tapes and DVD's that have been released are missing a scene from the original. That scene is the one where Richard Jaeckel and another trooper are ordered to hunt down the wounded Apache. Most prints then skip the hunt and go directly to Jaeckel's return with his report that the other trooper has died in getting the Apache. The original movie has the hunt scene and the death of the trooper in it. Still, it is a really good movie that showed a grittiness and realism that was ahead of it's time for the genre. -- Al
