Now it will take ten years to bring this guy to trial. He will have to be cared for at taxpayer expense for the rest of his life or until some celebrity takes up his cause and they release him. He apparently already had a lengthy criminal history and was still allowed on the streets. My understanding is that the school shooter in Florida from over a year ago has still not been brought to trial. And there is apparently no trial date in the near future. It is difficult to fathom the endless delays. His only possible defense could be insanity because he was caught redhanded but in most states a defendant is seemed "sane" if it can be shown that they can distinguish right from wrong. So any efforts to conceal preparations for a crime and fleeing are indicative of someone who is competent to stand trial even if they otherwise have a screw loose. That shouldn't take more than five minutes to resolve. It's inexplicable why the legal process takes so long. Mostly seems to be a tactic by defense attorneys used to bog down the system when they know the cause is hopeless and the DA plays along because they are overworked. The Golden State Killer in California is still awaiting trial even though DNA links him to several murders and rapes. He is in his 70s and will probably die of old age before they ever get started. His trial could be conducted today and within five minutes there would be enough evidence for any jury to convict.
