Sickles' Salient/Battle of Gettysburg/July 2nd, 1863 (1 Viewer)

I thought it was just me...…………….:wink2:

It has a different feel to it in the Fall vs the Summer, it has an overall feel to it that something really bad happened there, hard to describe, you have to experience it for yourself to understand.

The battlefield where the first days fighting took place is enormous as well, the Iron Brigade was decimated fighting a delaying action that allowed the rest of the Union Army to retreat and take up positions behind the town; without their sacrifice, who knows what would have happened, they were the cream of the Union Army, First Brigade, First Division, First Corps, they were basically wiped out as a brigade and were never the same after that battle, I believe they sustained close to 80% casualties.
Fortunate for the Union Army that Reynolds and his boys were there. Someone had to offset the 11th Corps.:wink2: -- Al

My former boss at the last real job I had before I got into the toy soldier business had the last name of Dilger; I asked him if he was related to Dilger, who's battery was in 11th Corps, he had no clue, so I did some research and come to find out, he was related, I thought it was the coolest thing ever, he seemed like he could have cared less when I told him...……………..

Another great display from George. Am I the only one who thinks he may have been trapped in the basement all this time? But he is having so much fun he forgets to call for help.
This and the replies has made me want to go back to Gettysburg .

Thanks Chuck; yesterday it was raining sideways here and I was pretty much done with work around 1:00PM, so I figured what better use of my time than to do this layout...……………..I'm living the dream, not going to lie...…………...:wink2:

Amazing George!!! Wow {eek3} That's a ton of soldiers and they tell the story well. I bet you had a great time imagining it all, gathering the materials and setting it all up. Thanks for all the pictures. Since we all don't live down the street from each other we can't just run over to each other's houses and visit and see set ups and collections like this. So this in the next best thing, and I'm sure glad we have it.

Thanks for the feedback and the kind words Joe, I appreciate it. Yes, this one was a great deal of fun to research and then setting up as you said. I think the research is literally half the fun, so many great resources out there, I found a very good one for this layout and once I did, it came together fairly easily.

I agree, the search is always half the fun. Glad you found the right resource for this massive project. It came out great. It's great that you have the space for it too.
I can get over how many figures you have in that composition....that's a ton of painting!

There are a huge number of wargaming scenario booklets that show topography, fences, fields, roads, trees, buildings, unit placement, that's the beauty of the wargaming world.

I have 4,000 ACW figures, all painted and based; wargamers I talk to are amazed all of my figures from all of my collections are painted...……..many wargamers have piles of raw lead they will never get around to painting, my attitude is what's the point of that? Buy them, paint them, use them, life is too short ,none of us are guaranteed tomorrow...………………….

Wow! George that is a fantastic layout. As a wargamer I know how much work goes into putting something like that together. You captured the battle perfectly.

My wife and I love Gettysburg in the Fall and early winter. Very beautiful that time of year. But no matter when, I have always enjoyed visiting.

Thank you so much Walt, I got the idea from the Fire and Fury Scenario booklet #2, 1862-1863, the F & F and Mingus books on Gettysburg and Antietam are my go to books for ideas.

Are you going to Fall In; I have a toy soldier show the same weekend in Long Island, so I can't make it, I also missed Historicon too as I got sick the week of the show, but I will be at Cold Wars, it's at the Host in 2020, so I will be there...……………...and yes, Gettysburg is great in the Fall, that is my favorite time of the year to go, leaves are turning/falling, there is a nice chill in the air, battlefield and restaurants are not as crowded, no school field trips like in the Spring (and like any of those kids want to be there, they get dragged there kicking and screaming...………………..:rolleyes2:)………...

George, yes I will be at Fall-In. Only about 10 minutes away from where I work. On my lunch break the other day I took a drive through Valley Forge National Park. Very lovely this time of year.

I have never played any Fire and Fury games, but I know they have some excellent scenario booklets.

I took my wife to see the diorama on her 28th birthday before we went out to dinner. She was not as impressed as me!
