I am trying my hand at painting. I want to start with "old school" gloss. What companies make simply castings similar to Trophy and the like. I am looking for minimal detail to give myself as much chance of success as possible! {sm3}

Thanks!

ZB,

Well my friend you are going to just be a regular elf in Santa's workshop now huh?

BTW I love the "old school" paint schemes.

Britains made a few sets as castings a few years back. Even came with paints, you can find them on ebay and the detail is minimal but effective.

I have never tried any painting myself but I have looked at some sites and Jeff (aujj65) painted a couple of soldiers for me and they were from Fusilier. In addition, Beating Retreat painted some figures for me from the Wilhelm Reich era and they were from Hussar, a Fusilier label. Tommy Atkins is a Fusilier label as well. In other words, you can't go wrong with Fusilier.

Great suggestions!

I'm leaning towards the White Tower Legends of the West - look fairly "simple" but detailed enough to be interesting.
I just started a casting that I had laying around. Like I've always said - I hold good painters in high regard! hahahah
This is hard!

Appreciate the lists of catalogs . . . let's keep them coming! Should anyone have suggestions as to where to purchase parts (rifles, heads, arms), please pass the info along.

Zach, you can also get Britains castings from Ron Ruddell of London Bridge Collector's Toys, http://www.londonbridgetoys.com. Ron is an authorized Britains dealer, selling both current and classic items, and he's also an authorized vendor of replacement parts for the classic hollowcast toy soldiers. It's worth it to call or email, and talk to Ron. Tell him I sent you.

Prost!

Keep an eye on the new Imperial Miniatures (with many of the old All the Queens Men coming back into production), Zach. The owner, Mike is a member of our community here - so maybe easier to get in touch with too. He sells his products as either painted or castings - which is a refreshing change in attitude fro a number of newer manufacturers.

Depends rather on what era you are going to collect too. You can see what Mike has already - online at.

A few more British small producers Zach - to add to the others suggested - who also sell painted or castings.

Langley Miniature Models - who do nice and simple to paint Toy Soldiers - which respond well to gloss:

Then there's RP Wold Models with their Steadfast Range - I particularly like their Victorian range.

And there's ATS - who have a large range - designed by the late Alan Caton (Trooper) which are also superb - though can maybe be trickier to paint than the previous two given above.

Good to see that Sarum Soldiers appears to be getting ready to resume online sales of their figures/castings soon too. Well worth a look - I have been patiently waiting for some Cowboys for about a year or so.

I would have added Yeomanary miniatures - but Brian seems to be very difficult to contact - and I'm still unsure of what happened there - as I'm still awaiting any news of an order made quite some time ago.

Hope that helps - jb
