Did K&C make mounted glossy Skinners Horse figures?

Reason I ask is I came across some and I can't id them, but they look like early K&C or Frontline. Now, my hesitation on Frontline is they do not have a base to them and it doesn't look like one was removed. I don't think they are Trophy either. It is a mystery.

I need to shoot photos to post, but any answers to above question would be helpful!

Hi Tom,

I believe they did do some Skinners Horse, Louis would know for sure. But there are a couple of others who did as well. I think the Skinners horse done by Nostalgia/Shamus Wade were mounted and had no bases. Somerset also did Skinners Horse mounted. Need to see the photo to make a positive ID though.

Please post some pictures Tom, as you know Trophy produced early sets with no bases

Cheers

Tom,

I know K&C did the Duke of Connaught's Own Bombay Lancers, and 25th Frontier Force Cavalry Lancers (both turbaned Indian Army Lancer regiments) in 1989, so it is possible they repainted some as Skinner's Horse. Compare the ones you are considering purchasing to the photos of the Duke of Connaught's Own Bombay Lancers, and 25th Frontier Force Cavalry Lancers in Volume III of the K&C book (or ask Larry to e-mail you some photos - Hans has some for me, but has never gotten around to bringing them up yet so I can't take photos). If the castings are identical, they are probably a K&C one-off.

That face says Frontline to me. Doesn't look like K & C sculpting. Also, unless the picture is reversed, the horse is not a K & C horse, at least compared to the ones I have. The ones I have the front left hoof is curled or curved. In yours, it's the reverse.

Brad,
That is my impression, however, no base and I cannot in all archives of Frontline Skinners ever find one without the base and these may have dings on them, but there was never a base unless they were refinished by a complete expert. I know back in the old days, it is hard to tell Frontlline and K&C apart, but I still don't know. I do tend to agree with your first thoughts of Frontline, I just cant prove it out.

Tom

Sorry Tom,

It's definitely not K&C. The K&C Indian Army Lancers have a lance which does not fit into a stirrup holder, and have the left front hoof curled up on the horse.

Could it be Ducal?

Tom,

I think Andy, Louis or Larry may have the full story but wasn't the same factory making both K & C and Frontline at one point. I think this came up when Graeme was selling some K & C recently. In addition, Larry has a K & C figure stamped Frontline or vice versa. The horse is seemingly in the style of K & C.

We may never know and this may just be one of those very interesting pieces you have in your collection :)

Not Ducal or Marlborough as I checked my Ducal Catalog and my actual set of Marlborough!

Brad,
I think you may be right, the figure itself certainly resembles later Frontline poses, that is for sure! This figure was definitely made around the time of the early K&C and early Frontline work, so the vintage is correct!
