Yes, Jim's shield wall is very impressive looking. It will be enormous with the addition of another 75 figures. This certainly dwarfs mine and I thought my Saxon Shieldwall was sizeable.

Mike...
nobody ever in your life told you that you were sizeable...:D

I really enjoy building dioramas with multiple figures so this Hastings display will be awesome.
Better save some room for the additional Saxons and Normans coming soon.

My Punic War diorama (Zama) will have about 250 figures and hopefully some elephants
in the near future. Probably my last large diorama, most will have 50 or 60 figures because
of space considerations.

It is my theory that JJD figures work best in large groupings. The above is a perfect example. I am not the biggest fan of his individual figure settings.

Yes I agree. I think he makes a large draw up of figures and if he likes the way it comes out then he breaks it down to sets and then has them sculpted and cast.

Holy Toledo!!! {eek3}
My goodness, it looks like one toy soldier to represent each man who was actually in the battle!
Has anyone estimated the cost for this formation?

Looks like close to 100 figures so $4000+.........worth every penny!

Hi gang!

My JJD Saxon shield wall is about 30 strong so far - but this one is truly impressive. I tend to go for variety in my collection but I do enjoy viewing the large themed dioramas. I just can't resist getting a little of everything. My collection is a real smorgasbord of manufactures and figures representing most conflicts.

I do have 60 Regal Saxons, around 15 WB and a similar amount of old Conte figures. I have no trouble mixing and matching different manufactures so when brought together I have a shield wall of around 120 different figures so far.

Most impressive for me are the JJD Norman cavalry. I have 12 of JJD latest offerings and 20 Regal and 7 Conte with more JJD expected in 2021. They really look very impressive on mass.

Happy collecting all.

Gary

I am like you Gary, I collect a lot of different ranges and brands and I am happy to display them together, size depending. I want to get a few more Saxons and do a few alterations like JJ Deitrich has done. I reckon I have about 90 JJD Saxons, 20 WB, a few Russians and a handful of Conte. So about 130 or 140. I would love to get 300 odd and make a diorama man for man of The Battle of Hastings

Haha, just did some research and depending on the source Harolds troop strength varied from 5000 -13000, most common belief between 7000-8000. As much as I would love a man fir man dio I might settle for something smaller.

I thought he only had 3-500 troops!

It doesn't necessarily make a diorama better with having the largest number of figures. As long as you are comfortable with the area size and are able to make a scene that is pleasant to the eye is the most enviable things in diorama making. For me covering the bases, groundwork and a background make a scene so much better. The Battle of Hastings does lend itself to substantial diorama numbers but even half a dozen figures placed in a action scene can look impressive. Happy collecting. Greg.
