Somerset Gordon of Khartoum (1 Viewer)

Great set Martyn...very reminiscent of the movie...nice pick up!

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

The set was actually patterned after the painting, "The Death of General Charles Gordon", by Joy,(forgot his first name, William maybe?). The movie incorporated the composition of the painting into the scene to which you refer. Two of the figures I extrapolated from a detail at the lower right corner of the painting. Can you guess which ones? I also added some figures because a collector mentioned that it needed filling out.

The flag is probably from the artist's imagination. I've not been able to find anything remotely resembling it in my research. It was a challenge to extrapolate a coherent pattern based on the parts of the flag that are visible in the painting.

I used to have a print of the painting but let a customer talk me into selling it to him along with a the set. I haven't been able to locate another. I've spent hours looking at websites of military prints and the only one that I found was much too expensive. (I'm looking for something at around $20.) If anyone knows of a dealer who definitely carries the print, puleeese let me know.

Thanks,

Ron
