Songs about historical events (1 Viewer)

You Englishmen and your love for anything that sounds like a dance hall song!!

How about a song associated with an historical event - Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No, I don't regret anything), recorded by Édith Piaf, which has such a strong connection to the French Foreign Legion and Algeria?

Lili Marlene, The White Cliffs of Dover, We'll Meet Again and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square have song emotional connections with WW2. Its a Long Way to Tipperary and Pack Up Your Troubles would be the same for WW1.

Not exactly an event per se......................

SSgt Barry Sadler - "The Ballad of the Green Berets" (1966)

Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major - Billy Cotton and his Band.

What?^&confuse

My three favourite songs with historical references would have to be "Done with Bonaparte" by Niamh Parsons (written by Mark Knopfler), a haunting song about the harshness of the Napoleonic wars

followed by Ian & Sylvia's version of the traditional "Brave Wolfe" about the French & Indian War death of Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham.

and the Mark Knopfler & James Taylor duet "Sailing to Philadelphia" about the surveying of the Mason/Dixon line.

All the Best,
