Watched Trainwreck today which had me thinking about sports people in movies.

This one had Lebron James, Stoudemire, and John Cena. Ted 2 had Tom Brady.

The James and Cena roles were a bit more than a cameo appearance and enjoyed them although never followed their sports careers.

The majority of sports people in movies are obviously American. Can't think of any British examples although Jason Statham was a diver before becoming an actor.

So a few things spring to mind.

Some play themselves but I guess the mark of success is to get actual roles

The Rock is an example of somebody who has done very well in movies. Have there been others and which movies have featured sportsmen or women ?

Can anybody think of any British examples ?

Any sportsmen who would transfer well to movies/TV ?

Quite liked Train Wreck, fairly raw and frank kind of romance, but it came across as realistic. Run out of movies in the local theatre after seeing Man From Uncle (liked it), Ant Man (ok), Mission Impossible ( quite good) & Last Cab to Darwin (sobering and well acted). Robin.

That is a pretty impressive list of recent movie attendance. You should buy shares in Village Roadshow or Hoyts {sm4}.

Enjoyed Uncle as a kid but movie holds no interest. Main leads have no star power to get me in. Mission Impossible next for me.

One of the servant roles in Downton Abbey was filled by a first class cricketer. Short career in cricket and as yet nothing big in film. Cannot remember the name.

Not seen an episode of Downton but strangely enough in Trainwreck movie LeBron James is very concerned about not missing an episode otherwise can't discuss it with his team mates next morning.

How about..

Ray Winstone

At the age of 12, Winstone joined the famous Repton Amateur Boxing Club and, over the next 10 years, won 80 out of 88 bouts. At welterweight, he was London schoolboy champion on three occasions, fighting twice for England. The experience gave him a perspective on his later career: "If you can get in a ring with 2,000 people watching and be smacked around by another guy, then walking onstage isn't hard."

How about the England Football Captain - Bobby Moore - who appeared in the 1981 film "Escape to Victory"? A bit of a stinker of a film - but he played the part as well (or badly) as the rest of the cast.

I think he also had several cameo roles in the British TV series "Till Death Do Us Part". jb

Stinker of a film???? It is a truly glorious piece of trash ... so bad it becomes almost great ... for me it is up there with The Italian Job, Uncommon Valour, Breaking Away, Major League, The Party and Top Secret as guilty, guilty pleasures!

Agreed - that bad!:salute:: But up there with The Italian Job????????? ....Really!!!^&confuse^&confuse

Next up from me - the unforgettable Arnie Schwarzenneger!

Bodybuilder extraordinaire - who won the Mr. Universe title so many times - he just HAD to go into movies - like "Conan the Barbarian" and of course the unforgettable "Terminator" series.

Then of course - perhaps his greatest role - came as Governor of California - which some say isn't a movie at all - but a real job! Oh yeah! :D jb
