With Matt announcing up to thirty more figures in this range,is anyone else's mind boggling at what may come next?!.This is a brand new range starting from scratch, talk about spoilt for choice!.Imagine what may come next,Flamethrower team,Snipers,dead/wounded,Grenade throwing,MG team, hand to hand, its such a huge and famous battle to choose from. Its got to be one of the best bits of Matt's job, sitting down and deciding what to do next.

So guys, what would you like to see next.

I would like to see a few non-traditional sets like Austrians, Romanians or Russian Hiwis. There were something like 50,000 russians fighting on the German side in Stalingrad. Also personality figures (Paulus) and fighting vehicles.

Great ideas here, would like to see Paulus myself.

P.S Love the Tag line Doug!:D

Whatever Matt does with this line I'm sure it will be jaw-dropping. He has an expert understanding about his subjects history and details. Already the size and accuracy of this range is staggaring. The idea of a TS manufacture going to this length to cover the subject is something I for one have been waiting for.

I'd like to see buildings and heavy and light equipment of all kinds. I'm sure we will.

Yes,along with the realism of the figures the proposed depth of this range is very exciting,it encourages the collector that he is going to have a substantial collection to build up.

Rob,

I honestly believe that for me anyway, this is the most exciting announcement about a completely new range of figures and accessories since a UK dealer announced their rather special range (that also includes Russians if my memory serves me correctly).
;)
As you well know, I have an affinity for the lesser known conflicts of last century. I've tried to post twice now in the FL section that I'm seriously considering buying a few of the Russian figures to use in an idea I have for a diorama set on the Russian/Manchurian border, but for some reason neither post has got through. I think it must be the server I'm using. Maybe it doesn't like collectors who are interested in the more obscure "Little Wars".

I wonder how many collectors intend to buy everything? Or how many like it, but just won't buy because it is too expensive to get everything. I know with John Jenkins that a few collectors have indicated they don't collect it at all because they missed out on early sets (i.e. they are completists). My strategy is to cherry pick as we go along.

Yes i think i will cherry pick too, question is how long to leave it before choosing?.I love the look of the first releases, but the next wave could be even better??

Well, errrrr, hmmm, I admit that it was me who mentioned them in the first place Rob - but it was just in passing, and I'd rather not discuss them in the FL section of the forum if you don't mind - errrr, but, aaaaah, seeing *** you ask - yes I do have quite a collection of them now. In fact, Tony's getting a nice little addition to his beer and mars bar fund tomorrow if I can obtain a good enough internet connection for half an hour or so.

Mind you, I don't think FL will be too bothered about our little side conversation here seeing as I've also pre-ordered a certain number of their Exquisite Japanese Samurai figures as well as another wee surprise order; a wee surprise order which I ought to be able to put in the diorama and display section of the forum sometime during early July.
:):):)

Now that's an interesting idea Harry - to use our Russian Figures against the Imperial Japanese in Manchuria. The Japanese army would actually be a fascinating little addition as doing the Japanese wouldn't require entry into an entirely complete pacific theater, but rather only the Japanese could be done at first specifically to fight the border clashes with the Russians.

Certainly a lesser known topic but possibly something worth looking at in the future. Of course, if Eastern Front doesn't sell, I can't imagine Japanese will either, so let's hope that's not the case and that collectors can appreciate figures for what they are! Either way, an interesting thought...

Regards,

Matt

Can i ask Matt, are you considering vehicles right now,or as Stalingrad was not suited to large tank confrontations are these down the list of priorities?.

Actually, all of the items that have been mentioned so far (save perhaps Kiwis and some of the minor allies) are items on our radar plus many more that haven't been mentioned. As I said before, we plan on doing everything to allow for complete dioramas of our figures, and this will of course include vehicles and more. Further, the complete range will be a lot more than just 30 more figures, to clarify I said that 30 more were being worked on currently. The final tally will be much higher than that I think. This is a monumental battle - think of it like an Eastern Front Normandy in terms of scale and then imagine what you'd have to produce to cover Normandy well. Basically, we'll get through some checklist type items that are the core of the range, and then we'll have some fun with it. :D

I was looking over the Beevor book recently and recall that the Hiwis made up about 25% of the front line forces of 6th Army at Stalingrad. That is sort of an astounding figure - at least to me.

I've read Beevor's book several times - is the number really that high? (I don't recall, but you're right - if that's correct it's an astounding figure). I do recall him saying that some of the Hiwis were excellent fighters while others were shirkers (I guess that makes them like everyone else I suppose).

The thing with Hiwis is I'm thinking it might be difficult to model them as they would be wearing German uniforms, no?

They did wear German uniforms but recall they had distinctive patches and other markings to distinguish them. Many also served in non-combat roles. Probably a variety of uniforms for those guys.

This is from wikipedia:

Some Soviet hiwis were pressed into combat in the ranks of the German Army (Wehrmacht Heer) in desperate situations, such as with the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad, where they added up to about 25% (50,000) of the front-line strength. Some German divisions had a higher ratio - for example, the 71st and 76th Infantry had parity between German and "Hiwi" manpower

Are we lumping hiwis and Ost Infantry into the same bucket? To me Ost infantry would be in uniform while hiwis were more behind the lines helpers including kids and wearing civilian clothes.
