Gebhard...

I would have to agree, horses would really add to the set rather than a prime mover or similar. I had not seen the official release about this from FL.

Matt's words from official announcement
With a basic split-trail design and originally envisioned to be towed by horse, it had hard rubber tires and an unsprung axle. A two wheeled limber was added after its initial production, which we have also included in the set, that allowed it to be towed by such vehicles as the SdKfz 7 8 Ton Prime Mover.

. I have had several conversations over this topic and If I were a poll kind of guy I would vote for the Horse :) To me nothing says Russian front and the harsh winter conditions like the pictures of the Horses cold breath , I think we sometimes overlook the enormous contribution of the Horse to WWII .

Mitch ,
Of course you have seen the official release from FL your posting on it  see post 1 of this thread  maybe you just got too excited by the Great Photo's and didn't take time to read it . :)
No trouble i know how ya feel , it is very nice .
I would love to see First Legion do Horses for this one . I always liked the field kitchen by Honour Bound and think FL could do a great job with it . Gebhard

Thought you meant a newsletter etc and you are right I did not read the literature just looked at the gun and crew and, the sheepskined guy. I have gone back and now read it properly. l think IMO this is the best thing they have released and horse drawn would be tremendous.

The transport configuration of the gun is different for horse transport with the gun being broken down into two loads (gun and carriage). As depicted the Sd.Kfz.7 (8 tonne) Prime Mover would be the appropriate towing vehicle. The upside of this is this is the same vehicle used to tow the 8,8 cm FlaK 18, 36 or 37.

True. The gun is not configured for horse drawn. Besides, this is part of the Stalingrad series - they'd already eaten most of the horses :D:D

Simply Amazing....First Legion with another outstanding release...It is high... It is far....It Is Gone...another Grand Slam for FL

i must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... I must resist... BUT HOW ?

IMPOSSIBLE:D..Forget it...This one is a must have;)

All great stuff as usual. Have things progressed with this series to the winter fighting? That German Hauptmann is a real keeper. Would like to see Paulus as a winter figure - maybe surrendering. Or the German airfields. A horrific scene.

Yes Combat...in its early stages it seems...There is a Winter Panzer III........Check out the FL Website for pictures

That is a picture of the trailer used to transport the barrel portion of the gun.

Here is the other half:

There aren't a lot of pictures of horse transport out there for this gun, at least not that I've been able to find. I think as soon as the mechanized option became available they were transitioned. It would be far less time consuming to be able to move the gun as a single unit.

Yikes, the airfield scene would have been horrific indeed. Great idea with Winter Paulus.

Its hard to believe there are not some good photo's out there of the transportation of this gun , that would be a good book on a little covered subject which would be a good read IMO . There are plenty of books on the glory units that used Horses like the 22nd SS Maria Theresia or 8th SS Florian Geyer and also the Cossack Units .
I would think it would also have presented a problem with heavy artillery pieces being horse drawn with keeping up with the Mechanized units . i would still vote a horse drawn one all the same ;). Best Regards Gebhard

A really good book for those interested in horses in the german army in WWII is as you would guess, Horses in the German Army in WWII by Louis Johnson. With over 500 pics if you want pics of the germans using horses for everything this IMO is about as good as it gets
