Hi all,

Finally getting time to put my JG minatures to use with some First Legion Stalingrad Winter Germans. Here are some pics.....Sammy20141112_081841 (1024x768).jpg 20141112_083638 (1024x768).jpg 20141112_083929 (1024x768).jpg 20141112_084127 (1024x768).jpg 20141112_143053 (1024x768).jpg

I can feel the cold! Outstanding!

Well Brad with the Artic blast blowing down from Canada these days figure I'd make it feel welcomed, even though we're alomst 80 degrees here in Tucson today:(.

I look forward to the 4 new winter Germans to add to this scene as well as the Pak winter gun/team, and maybe at some point another winter vehicle would be lovely...Sammy

Did the German 6th Army really have snow white uniforms at Stalingrad?
At first sight, in that and other pictures, they seem just thin and waterproof jackets and pants, which they wear over winter uniforms. On the book "The road to Stalingrad" (from the Series "THIRD REICH" edited by Time-Life Inc.) i found this Winter Combat, that it was a reversible uniform from green-camo (left) to white-snow (right). I hope it may help you.

there ya go mate.

The terrain pieces really tie the scenes in so well. The figures just compliment. Lot's of fun here rearranging the figures to bring the scenes to life, cold as it is. Robin.

Sammy , very good effort . Your snow looks very realistic, which product did you use ?
And yes they ( a few Germans ) had white waterproof jackets and pants in Stalingrad
guy:)

Hi Sammy,
Good to see ya posting and enjoying the Hobby. Great looking dio and it seems to be right on time with that polar vortex coming our way temps dropped 20 degrees from yesterday and are heading lower.

Just for the record the uniform you pictured has absolutely NO "Waterproof" qualities at all. The uniform pictured is the two piece winter reversible Heer parka and pants set from splinter pattern to white.

Great set up. regards Gebhard

Thanks for the kind words Guy, the snow is from JG Minatures, it really gives the most realistic snow I have used...Sammy

Awesome work Sammy :salute::

It's currently -2F here in Colorado Springs, so I can very much relate to the c-c-c-c-cold conveyed in this dio {sm4}

Thanks for the compliment Mike,

I have relatives who live in Estes Park CO. who called me yesterday with about 10 inches of snow on the ground and still falling!!! I'm a snow lover and they love to tease me with every good snow fall, hope to make it out there in Jan...Sammy

I'm well aware such uniforms (as well as single layer "covers") were used by armies of the "Third REICH".
- however my question remains: did soldiers of the 6th Army at Stalingrad actually wear them?

I know the Russians wore snow camouflage at Stalingrad; but have never heard of or seen any pictures of Germans wearing such. Greatcoats for sure; but never snow white.

Looks absolutely freezing in your great dio Sammy and the lighting adds to the chill factor too......brrrrrrr, you really would hate to be fighting in those conditions whatever side you were on.

Well mate, I'm certainly not an exspert on every field camo uniform, but between Matt at First Legion Gebhard and Guy here on the forum who have great knowledge of WWII uniforms and have both responded to your question
And to be fair..I'll change the title to winter Germans... Sammy

Thanks to all the fellows for the kind words and "likes" of this little set up, at some point I will pick up the Pak 38, the 4 new winter Germans and the winter machine gunner to fill in some empty spots and a few more JG Minature tiles to give it some room to grow...Sammy

I'm not an "expert" either. But I've seen quite a few pictures and films taken at Stalingrad over many years.
(It's a great story of personal interest to me; the turning point of the Eastern front).

Never have I seen a picture of a German soldier, at Stalingrad, wearing snow camouflage.

Since the Diorama is name as: "Stalingrad Winter Dio", I thought there was some special knowledge.

But if it's only a fantasy dio , no problem at all - I was only asking.

Cheers

Officers often had custom made articles not available to the rank & file.

There is also evidence here and there of "Field Made" snow camouflage items.

And there's always the opportunity to strip a Russian corpse.

........ Perhaps all the guys in the dio got lucky
