Assault on Clervaux Heinerscheid Part 2

Part 2 of Storm over Clervaux

Just before dawn on December 16 1944, the Germans started their artillery bombardment and around 7am after things had quiet down. The 26th Volksgrenadier Division was unleased onto Clervaux
hitting the American 110th positions all along the line.

The American 110th of the 28th Infantry division defended their positions with their rifles and browning Automatic Rifle, .30 caliber machine guns were rushed up to bolster the thin line that the Americans held. The Germans spilled out in large numbers in a bid to overwhelm the American lines.

The Americans were shocked that the Germans were attacking so close to their positions and a desperate firefight broke out, American GIs snipe at the Germans from 2nd storey buildings while bazooka
teams were rushed foward to the defense lines.

Shadowfax,

Good Job. Thanks for sharing your displays with the forum.

I see you have now positioned your figures with the unit insignia hidden, except for the one tankee.

Shadowfax,

I see what you mean by your collection is growing at an alarming rate.^&grin:wink2:

Good to see you press on with Arty support.

By the way, the unit insignia on the tankee is correct.....9th Armoured Div.

A tank coy from 9th Armoured Div. was assigned to the 110th Regt. in Clervaux.

Dear "Shadowfax" & "Glossman":

It is nice to see that there are so many avid toy soldier collectors in the Republic of Singapore. Really nice photos by "Shadowfax"! Just some additional information on the US Army side of the photos. The 110th Infantry Regiment commanded by a Col. Hurley Fuller was part of the US Army's 28th Infantry Division at the start of the battle of the Bulge. On 16 December 1944 the 687th US Army Field Artillery Battalion served as artillery support for the 109th & 110th regiments of the 28th US Army Infantry Division.

Re: Assault on Clervaux Heinerscheid Part 2

Great set up. Very nice collection you have there. From the sniper's position in the top of the building, the hanging crooked picture is a nice detail touch by K&C.

Re: Assault on Clervaux Heinerscheid Part 2(b)

Really nice work on depicting one of the lesser known but quite important actions in the early part of the Ardennes campaign. The actions of Fuller and his battalion combined with later actions by small teams from the 9th Armored Division stalled the Germans long enough for help to get to Bastogne. If not for these heroic actions the 101st Airborne would have arrived to find Bastogne (and its road network) already in German hands.

Since you are discussing the units involved I had to throw in a bit of historical trivia - I know that your display is based on the available models, but the 9th Armored Division was equipped with M4A3 tanks (versus the K&C M4A1) and the US Army wasn't whitewashing their tanks during the defense phase of the battle (no time, units were too busy). The camouflage came in January 1945 for the counter offensive.

Get used to it Shadowfax: that's the problem with the addiction this hobby brings, demographic explosion! Soon enough you realise there's no more room left...
