As stated previously, I do not support the removal of historical (not political) monuments. I have over time said that if the problem is on public ground while I don't agree, if that is the problem in today's society, then move them to a museum or battlefield park. I say this even though some were originally put up in a city (Richmond) as a museum park, but the City has grown since that time over 100 years ago. Ok, so probably most can agree on that.

What I don't condone is a mob rule of violence tearing down and defacing monuments. There is no justification for this in a civilized society, not only is it dangerous, it is basically saying it is ok by mob rule. Is that what we really want here? I would find it hard to believe that the majority of Americans are ok with an angry mob tearing down things they don't like. If this is true, then I really do fear for the future.

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

I really want to stress here that I also do not condone monuments erected for the sole purpose of furthering Jim Crow and the rejection of civil rights, I do not believe they have a place in any context and thankfully most of them have been previously removed in the last 20 plus years. In today's world, you really should not have to restate this, but i just want to be clear.

There is clearly an element in the UK of people who will join any demo in order to try to wreak some mayhem and destruction doing nothing to further the cause of the legitimate and peaceful demonstrators. Frankly the unruly element do not know they are born.

When the Taliban started blowing up ancient statues and destroying museums in Iraq or Syria, I was actually sadden to see artifacts of the cradle of civilization destroyed. So I'm really torn about our Confederate statues. I'm thinking we shouldn't erase history, but learn from it. Turn it into a positive. Not showing the Gone with the Wind movie and eliminating Elmer Fudds shotgun from my beloved Looney Tunes, good grief, that's really going too far. What's next, the Three Stooges?

Regardless of all our differences (the collective forum), I think that is the fear (at least mine) as I continue to see lots of items taken out of their historical context for today's purposes. There are very legal and viable solutions for the monuments, statues, etc.

The media stuff is another ball of wax. I don't believe in censorship of any kind on historical movies, shows, etc. Put a disclaimer in them is ok by me, but they should not be erased. It should be up to each individual how they want to view them, teach from them, etc. That should not be "government regulated"!

Careful here guys - throwing around needless insults will result in thread closure.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Gettysburg battle field with my brother back in 2011 and was amazed at all the memorials and statues, many of which had very informative plaques attached.

It was a day trip by bus for us and we loved every minute of it and took a stack of photos.

I'd be vert upset if this protest movement started vandalising and pulling down statues in such an historic place!

No doubt the Natl parks and arlington are next,,,Insulting the Taliban?
