Ted Toys - Buffalo Soldier (1 Viewer)

Hi JB,

Congratulations! These figures will make excellent additions to your collection. I most certainly look forward to seeing the figures when you have completed all your work with them and you have completed the painting of them. Please keep us posted!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Hi to both Pat and Martyn - thanks for that beauty Martyn - another cracker from Len!

I can confirm that Nick and I have done a deal - so hope around a dozen figures are winging my way soon over the Atlantic! (Thanks Randy - Nick is a wonderful guy - can see how you get on!)

Rest assured - once these figures arrive - I will keep you posted - under "Painting", probably.^&grin

Also - Giles at Dorset Soldiers and I - will be meeting up very soon - to see what we can "convert" from his range to suit the mounted "BUFFS"!

He's promised me a new cast head with upturned brim stetson - that will fill the bill for the 9/10th US cav. regiments - so the possibilities of adapting his ACW figures seem - well - extended. We shall see!:D

Thanks for all the posts and pics in this thread - which will help enormously with painting these wonderful figures - with an intruiging history - that I was TOTALLY unaware of before seeing this post from Randy. I will try and do these somewhat ignored guys justice...............:smile2: johnnybach

Thanks Randy (Polar Bear) - my package from Nick arrived today - containing my castings. Great guy - and was surprisingly easy to buy them from him. First time I have bought anything from the USA. Without your kindness and perseverance in helping me get in touch - I would have never made it! - johnnybach^&grin^&grin

That is great news and very glad to help--anytime.

We will look forward to your painted figures.

Great to have you on the forum.

Hi Randy - I'm very impressed with the standard of casting and detail on Nick's "Camp Randall" figures. Seems to be quite a "hard" mix of metal in them - so should paint-up very well. Nick also sent me a couple of "Stetson Heads", for me to change some of his figures slightly - which was very kind of him - so will need to choose which figures to change a little. I never paint here in the UK now, - as all of my tools/paints/brushes/lighting - and most importantly for me "magnifyers" are in my little studio (sounds very posh - but it's my three desks really!), over in France. I am just de-flashing and assembling some parts on the figures I'm collecting, for the moment. The real fun will start a bit later. Reminds me - now where's my list of paints required...............? jb^&grin

All of Nick's castings are made by Valiant Miniatures in Wisconsin.

They have been making toy soldier castings for many years and have a large selection. They have a WWI Buffalo Soldier in France (last picture)

HOBBY KIT 9845

I have included examples of their other offerings including Pinkerton and Madame Butterfly from Puccini's Opera

Enjoy!

Hi again Randy. Very pleased to see the range of castings available over there - and note the WWI Soldier you mention. I haven't got as far as that conflict with regard to Buffalo Soldiers (yet) - but that particular figure might be easier to replicate - with an appropriate head change - a bit closer to home. However, if the rest of Valiant Miniatures range is up to the standard that I recieved from Nick - they will surely be excellent figures. I have noted their web-site for possible future figures, though, of course, it's always easier to source figures closer to home.

The Internet is certainly making the World of the TS collector a smaller place though. My small order to Nick was posted in Wisconsin on 17th October - and my postie delivered to my door in England on the morning of 22nd Oct. No import taxes to pay either, ( tip here, I think - is to keep the order quite small - just a Dozen figures this time).

Just delighted with them - so thanks once again....... I will post them once completed, to show how I get on............johnnybach

Buffalo Soldiers & America's National Parks

Around 1903-1904 Buffalo Soldiers from the 9th Cavalry and 24th Infantry served as Park Rangers in Yosemite. When President Teddy Roosevelt visited Yosemite in 1903 with naturalist John Muir, they served as an escort.

Another interesting turn for the Buffalo Soldiers, Randy. A very interesting read - and I particularly enjoyed the depiction by Shelton Johnson in his amusing and enlightening video clip - describing how he "joined up" in the "Cav". Couldn't help but think back to my South Wales background, and compare his choices ( be a share cropper - or join the Army) with the choices often open to young Welsh lads around the same time ( be a coal miner - or join the Army).

I have also been watching some History TV programmes recently, about the segregated American Regiments that took part in both World Wars. They often make uncomfortable watching too.

Thanks for the insights into this particular group of very interesting soldiers. I will be making up my little batch of Buffalo Soldiers with a lot more insight into their background and history now. johnnybach

Interestingly, the Buffalo Soldiers came to the island of Hawaii to work in the national park. I learned that on a PBS commercial.

My own special interest is in African Americans in the Union Navy during the Civil War. I am researching Ensign Arthur B. Homer, a white officer from Massachusetts, who was aboard the USS Argosy from 1863-1865 as part of the Union Navy's Mississippi River Squadron. Thirty-five members of the integrated 66 man crew were African Americans. Ensign Homer was the younger brother of 19th C American painter Winslow Homer (1836-1910) whose art works included African Americans and maritime subjects throughout his career.

Here are useful resources on African Americans in the Union Navy:

African American Civil War Sailors Identified

"The Negro in the Union Navy" by Herbert Aptheker Word document. Click on the link The Negro in the Civil War to download the document.
Interestingly the article was published in 1947 and one year later: "In 1948, President Harry S Truman's Executive Order 9981 ordered the integration of the armed forces shortly after World War II, a major advance in civil rights."

brad,

thanks for sharing your new ted toy buffalo soldier. It looks very compatible in size and finish with your trophy acws. If i am not wrong from a historical viewpoint, the buffalo soldiers did not appear till after the end of the acw.

I had a look at the ted toy site after reading this thread. Tedtoy has some very nice glossy acws including a "camp life" section. I wonder how these compare with the camp randall acws.

Raymond:)

the last 2 years i finally was able to hit the tedtoy room at ostn while i still had money. I have a column of yankee cavalry that to die for. Nice animation on the last two i got where they are passing a bottle to each other. I have a couple of marching and running sets too. Great figures and ted is great to deal with. I do need a buffalo soldier though
