A vain Roman officer has encased himself in his own personal protection Testudo !

certainly one way to get around with some protection:)

The fort is by Carlo (Risorgimento) in Italy. base by David Marshall. All figures Tomas Gunn except the K&C mounted officer. The Testudo without the officer in the middle is 66 men strong.

Cheers,

Stefan

Well that's amazing and how it should be done, but you need deep pockets to produce this. Outstanding. Robin.

That is one impressive Testudo. I would hate to be the legionary in formation behind that horse though^&grin

Stefan...

first off...your testudo is awesome...
I'm a sucker for epic style pictures...
and your's is great...
coupled with the building Carlos made...that looks very nice!

and I know nothing about testudos...
other than the very basics...

I have looked at a lot of testudo images on the Internet...
and I have seen this configuration set up in two ways...
mostly like you have yours set up...

but it seems to me...
if I were in one...
I would suggest having the front row shield overlap the second row of shields...
instead of the second row of shields overlapping the front row...

it seems like an arrow could get through much easier...
the way these figures were designed...

again...
I'm not saying it's wrong...
most of the examples favor this style...
it just looks backwards to me...

seems like an arrow could get through a lot easier...

again your set up looks awesome...
the figures are bad azzzzzzzz!
and I'm not smarter than a Roman general in such matters...
but it seems safer to overlap the front row onto the back row...
so the arrows could not get through any cracks...

I would prefer to be in the testudo in the second picture...

Thats a really good point Mike.

But the ROM067A figure with the shield above his head is made angling backwards, not forwards. I tried adjusting my Testudo as per your suggestion but it simply doesnt work. TGM would need to remake this figure with his shield angling forward then I would need to replace 44 figures (!) so no can do im afraid.

Cheers,

Stefan

Stefan...

I'm not suggesting you sell these figures and buy new ones...
your display is awesome...
I'm jealous...
I wish I owned it....
your figures were designed to have their shields overlap the way they do...
as they were designed this way...they won't interlock any other way...

if you look at images online...
most images favor this method...

some interlock the other way...

all I'm saying is that...
historically if this is the correct way to overlap the shields...
the Roman Army might have found it more effective to overlap like the second photo I posted...
so arrows would not slip between overlapping shield cracks and hit a soldier in the face...

I know there is a Testudo on Trajan's Column with the rear ranks overlapping those in front as done by TG. But going along with Mikes theory, during a siege a Testudo approaching the walls would be attacked from above and a large weight falling on a front part of shield could flip up the shield behind

Nice display. I think this is the largest testudo I have seen.

Nice, that would have cost a pretty penny for 66 figures

Great scene! If that formation was headed at me, I'd be thinking about a 'dignified retreat' {sm4}
