On TNT tonight. Ten episodes. Mixed reviews. I read the book when it first came out many years ago. A decent historical fiction/detective story set in NY.

looks really good...watched the TNT special preview last night...twisted little story...good acting...I'm gonna watch episode 1 tonight...

see if they re-show the special and watch it before you watch episode 1...

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot it was on tonight. Read the book, great story, and the follow on, not as good. Hope the series is as good. Chris

apparently...

last night's special episode was Episode 1...

so if you see Episode 1...

you have not missed a thing...

a good watch...

has a Penny Dreadful air to it...

Not bad, but honestly one hour over ten weeks. I might lose interest or forget
all the nuances over 2½ months. I think I'll let DVR build up and binge.

Anyone who likes historical fiction along the lines of "The Alienist" might enjoy Robert McCammon's excellent Matthew Corbett series. Set mostly in 18th century NY. A bit of Sherlock Holmes and James Bond in early America. The first book in the series "Speaks the Nightbird" is a bit slower and longer than the latter books but things really pick up after that one. McCammon has written some really great books. If you have never heard of him, think Stephen King without the movies.

Very enjoyable series:

The first episode was decent. I think they did a great job with the imagery. Not the cheap CGI that you sometimes see in historical shows. It does have the feel of Penny Dreadful but the acting is not quite as good. The guy playing Teddy Roosevelt is a bit bland. And Dakota Fanning is no Eva Green. Still pretty entertaining. I read the book years ago but have forgotten almost the entire plot.

I too read the Alienist years back and the followup by Caleb Carr, The Angel of Darkness, which wasn't as compelling. I think the TV first episode was good, but it's either I'm deaf or the sound staging was lacking because I struggled to hear the dialogue. Anyone else experience that?

I have that trouble a lot. The background noise and music is loud but the dialogue often is too soft to hear. Closed captioning is helpful some times. CC is awful for live TV programs like sports and news but great for movies and TV shows.

I didn't, but then I keep my sound system on "night mode." The dogs like it better also.

"Enjoying clear sound at a low volume level (Night Mode) This function allows you to retain a theater-like environment at low volume levels. When watching a movie late at night, you will be able to hear the dialog clearly even at a low volume level."

That's a good idea and i think I'll try that.....................thanks Combat.

BL I'm completely unaware of that feature. I would probably find it on the TV remote, not the cable remote. And it may be called something else also. I'll fish around for that....................Thanks also.

It depends what you use for sound. I by-pass the TV sound and use a receiver.
So mine is set up on the receiver. If you use the TV for sound it will be there. Either search
on tv model number + night mode or receiver model number + night mode. Some sound heavy
movies with over the top special effects like Dunkirk it is a must IMO.

Watched the first episode last night. Fairly good, as mentioned in an earlier post, the Roosevelt figure not what I would expect from what I have read of him. But the plot is good and I don't remember some details having read the book many yrs ago. Think it will be a good series. Chris

I really wanted to like this one but it's not doing it for me. The acting is mediocre and the story is dragging. I may be burnt out on plots involving searching for a serial killer that crop up often since Silence of the Lambs. Mindhunters is another along those lines. They even did the old switch-a-roo in this one where the police approach a door where the viewer is led to believe the killer is by cutting back and forth from scenes of the killer to the police approaching a door only to discover they are different places. That is lifted straight from Silence of the Lambs. It's not the worst show in history but something of a disappointment. Hopefully The Terror is as good as the previews.

I'm still loving this one...
poor John Moore...he's been beaten...raped...now chloroformed and drinking again...
it's a good plot with some good characters...
love the Captain that got fired...

I'm with you Mike . . . I enjoy this show too. John Moore should not be allowed to walk around by himself . . . .
:smile2: Mike

I'm enjoying this too even though I'm getting tired of seeing boys dressed up as women (don't know what Hollywood is trying to convey) but it does have the gaslight 1890's feel to it.

And as always these days there are a whopping TWO shows left for how long,,Dakota Fanning grew up,,a 5 10,, 12 year old,,

Held my interest thru the first 6 episodes. Good depiction of the time period I think. Chris
