The American Civil War diaries; in 20mm..... (1 Viewer)

Mark,
Encore and The Western Channel have been showing it quite a bit the past month or so, one of my all time favorite movies as a kid and still so to this day...........

Regards,
George

Mine too George, along with Gettysburg (my all time Civil War favorite)and Glory.
Mark:):D:)

Mark,
As much as I enjoyed Gettysburg, my all time favorite ACW movie is Glory, thought the battle scenes were a tad more realistic, although the assault by Oates on the extreme left of the Union line was spectacular in it's own right and Picketts Charge was well done also.

The Union assault on Fredericksburg and the battle along the stone was very well done in Gods and Generals for that matter......

Is there anything you CAN'T do at that scale George...another fabulous set up, Captain really liked your train set up...sometime I wonder was I born in the wrong scale:D:D:D:D

Thanks Colin, I appreciate your encouragement. You have done a fabulous job with the larger scale, I encourage you to continue with what you do, I appreciate your efforts.

1/72nd has always been my scale of choice and you will see why once I get rolling with more ACW such as Antietnam, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, etc; plus, I still have quite a bit planned for WWII............:)

Great set up George can't wait to see what is in store for us. :)

Captain nice little set you have also, a great way to combine two hobbies :)

George,

I am a fan of your 20mm wargame set-ups, reminds me of the "good old days"!:D I know I always ask this, but what make of figures are these? I've lost touch with what is available nowadays.

Looking forward to your next installment.

Regards

Jeff

Thanks Brit, you can also thank Jeff and Bob for the gentle "nudge" to get cracking on something other than WWII.

Thanks for the feedback Jeff, about time I did something other than WWII eh? There is quite a group of manufacturers in my 20mm ACW collection, everything from Musket Miniatures, Frontier Miniatures, RSM Miniatures, Iron Brigade Miniatures, Qualitycast Miniatures and Kennington Miniatures; the sad thing is all but two of these companies are gone, 20mm ACW just isn't popular, the preferred scale is 15mm nowadays.........I'm lucky to have what I do, bought most of it about 5 to 10 years ago.......

Mark,

Have to agree with George there. For my tastes, Glory is about as good as I've seen. It wasn't just all about battle scenes (which are cool). It goes a lot deeper than that into the lives of free black soldiers.

Thanks for proving that great minds do think alike Pete...........the story really got me.

One of my favorite scenes is when Shaw reads the letter than the CSA will shoot any Negro soldier they capture in Union service and the next day as he is about to address the recruits, he discovers not ONE of them has left and all are willing to put they lives on the line for the Union.

Just a great movie.

Don't leave me out guys as you seen I got Glory there too. What do you guys think of Red Badge of Courage with Richard Thomas.I saw this a long time ago.
Mark

Trains and soldiers... Now I know you are having fun! These are 20mm or 25mm? Who makes them? There were some 28mm molds from Dutkins. Twice the guys in the same space. That is an attractive feature.

Remakes of classics will always be compared with the original movie and I have to say that the 1952 Red Badge of Courage directed by John Huston is a real classic starring the then little known "highly decorated WWII soldier" Audie Murphy.

The completed movie was butchered by MGM before releasing for the unbelievable reason that Louis B Mayer considered the film "Un-American":confused: Which subsequently caused a great film to be slashed into almost incoherence through the illiteracy of a few studio heads.

But even in it's 65 minute truncated form which is still available on DVD you can clearly see what a powerful film it is and what a great great civil war movie it would have been if left alone by the MGM knuckleheads.

I'm afraid the John Boy version pales into insignificance when compared with the mighty original-Try and catch it you wont be disappointed.

George,

I've never heard of any of these, I take it they are/were all US makers?

In 20mm - do you remember Jacklex figures? They are being sold again over here in the UK.

These are Bachman HO (1/87) scale trains. The figures are 1/72 (28mm) Imex, Accurate, Italeri and, Call to Arms.

Jeff,
Musket Miniatures and RSM Miniatures are still being produced here in the US, as are Kennington, which are made in the Uk, I am their US sales agent; the molds to Iron Brigade Miniatures and Frontier Miniatures have been sold and thus far, have not been put back into production. Why buy them if you don't plan on producing the figures, pretty strange.

Qualitycast from the Uk made some beautiful figures, but they have been out of business for about two years now. Have not heard of Jacklex; is there a website?

George

These are all plastic? Nice work! Keep on having fun playing with them. Any plans to get more?

I have hundreds of them I'm just not a fast painter. Things like, trains, tanks, 1/32 WWII, etc, keep getting in my way.
