Gents,

A while ago I introduced myself as a new wanna-be collector of ACW figures. Earlier this week I received my first Britains figure, Iron Brigade Standing Firing set #1. And god I'm amazed by its quality and detail. I cant stop watching my little soldier.

Now while browsing tonight for a good european based shop I ran into a french store that sells The Chosen Ground Command Set William Britains 31051. Dear god, this set is amazing. As I absolutely love everything Iron Brigade related I really really want this set. The fact that this set as far as I know has the only state flag makes it awesome.

However, I must admit, I have some doubts... This set is advertised as retired and extremely rare, 500 sets made. Ignoring the impossibility of obtaining the figures seperately it's value of individual figures combined do make up the price of this set. And I do have the money to purchase it. It is a lot of money though and I guess I'm looking for some opinions about this set, it's price and exclusiveness.

Regards,

If your an Iron Brigade fan I would encourage you to go for it....I don't have it myself, because of cost factors and the fact I enjoy Rebs a little more. I do have most of the Iron Brigade individuals. You did not mention the cost factor or which country you live in. One thing if you can find it here in the States there is a possibilty of your money being stronger then our dollar hence you may be able to save some money buying here and having it shipped. I do that with many of my UK friends who want things here in the states...the shipping is not out of sight.....

Also I would suggest a PM private message to Mestell. He knows the series frontwards and backwards. He is the guy I go to with all my questions since I too am somewhat new....

MSRP is $290 US. I like it and would recommend. Looks great displayed with some additional sets. You'll want the other releases which are 31073 and 31074 to go with it.

Need I say more . . . .

As for the money, I checked out and the stores that do sell it, it's almost equal everywhere and the store I found in europe wouldn't cost me any customs risk either as it's EU.

Well you know, only reason I'd love it so much as it's the only figure of Reynolds out there and the same goes for the state flag. The more and more I think about it, the more I cannot seem to justify the price. The price for that set would allow me to buy 4 packages of 3 figures each. Yes, it won't be exclusive ofcourse, but a lot more room to mix & match around.

I'll have to think about it for a few days.

I have collected Civil War figures for 12 years, and this is one of my top 5 favorite sets. I love the state flag, and the additional set with the mounted corps flagbearer especially. An excellent set, especially for those of us interested in the Iron Brigade and Gettysburg.

Hi Kaap,

The set you are contemplating purchasing is a terrific set. And, of course, no one else can make your purchasing decision for you. However, I would offer the following thoughts:

1.) Almost all of us have passed up figures/sets because of one factor or another and later kicked ourselves for doing so.

2.) Almost all of us have faced the decision of going for more figures for the same cost as something more special, but with fewer figures, to later regret our decision.

3.) Most of us have realized we have to set priorities for our purchasing and there will always be figures/sets we wish we could have added to our collection. However, there are many times our better judgement tells us it is best to not do so. Sometimes it is most agonizing to make these decisions, but base your decision on logic, not emotion.

My suggestion to you is to very carefully consider your alternatives and, to the extent possible, be sure you are comfortable with your final decision.

and,...

Whatever you finally decide, do not look back with regret. Rather look forward to how much you will enjoy the figures you acquire. As you consider your alternatives remember, regarding toy soldiers acquisition, there usually are no clearly right or clearly wrong decisions. No matter what you finally decide, your collection will be enhanced by whatever figures you add to it.

Good luck and please let us know what you finally decide to do.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Thanks for your reply.

And you are right. I've considered this set inside out now. Yes, it is awesome, but in the end the only real reason I'd want it are for the state flag bearer and John Reynolds. The other figures are all for sale seperately. If I calculate those costs it would be a lot cheaper.

So I think I'm going to pass this. Paying €285 incl. shipping for basicly getting Reynolds and that state flag is too much. I can only hope Britains will release more state flag bearers some time.

The funny thing is by the way, I showed my girlfriend the pictures in this thread and she absolutely loves the details on these figures. Hope she wont mind me passing this set hahaha ;)

Hello there!
I am the sculptor of the figures in 'The Chosen Ground' and I thought I should mention that all of the figures in set #31051 are exclusive to this set. When we designed this, we also released additional single Iron Brigade soldiers advancing at Right Shoulder to add to the scene if you wished. These are different than the two in the set and the drummer, officer and the National color of the Second Wisconsin are also unique from other figures in the ACW range. As #31051 was an "Art of War' set, none of these figures will be offered as singles in the future.
By the way, I am glad you are pleased with your Iron Brigade figure firing... it was one of my favorites too.
All the Best,
Ken Osen
