It's true. The first 50 King Tigers had a Porsche turret which had a curved mantlet (and curve on the left side for the commander's cupola). Not only were the curved surfaces difficult to make, the curve on the underside of the mantlet created a very large shot trap which could direct an AT round into the thinner deck plate armour. The Henshel turret eliminated the curves with a flat mantlet and this eliminated the shot trap.

Yeah, but that Porsche turret sure was purdy!!!:D

I don't know if any Porshe turrets were at Arnhem. Only 50 were produced and I think as the first KT produced, went to Schwere Panzer units in Russia.
Frank probably has those stats and will let us know when he has a minute.

Just checked & the first Porshe turret King tiger saw action in Normandy

Found my notes on the Porsche Tiger II.

The 50 Porsche turrets were allocated to only 3 Abt. units.

1. Panzer Lehr, 316 FKL Abt.: received the first 5 Porsche turret production Tiger IIs to replace their StuGs in Feb. 1944. The Tiger IIs were mechanically unsound and remained in France at Chateaudun where they were destroyed to prevent capture.

2. 503 Schwere.Pz.Abt. 1st Kompanie received 12 Porsche turret King Tigers for use in Normandy at the end of July, 1944 and 3rd Kompanie received 12 Porsche turret King Tigers, a few of which ended up on the near Eastern front and Berlin for the last battles of the war.

3. 506 Schw.Pz.Abt. received the final 21 Porche turret Tiger II's produced for use at Oosterbeek & Arnhem. So almost half of their 45 Tiger II tanks had Porsche turrets. Some of these Porsche turret models were used in the Battle of the Bulge.

Here is a picture of Tiger IIs (Porsche turret) of s.H.Pz.Abt.506 entrained for shipment to the Netherlands.

I believe there is a picture of a Porsche KT in Cornelius Ryan's book.

The wait will not be long for many vehicles, and so many other goodies.

Grab a front row seat, make yourself comfortable. Collect your favorite snacks, popcorn or whatever and prepare for the show. Announcements will abound plentiful in just a few days!:D:D:D

:D:D:D

What...you finished all the popcorn already? :) The 15th is our target date area for some major rollout intel: hang in there! :)

What a great idea to bring out a new range a day after my birthday when your know are have all my birthday money to spend ;):D

The Tiger was not the only German tank and it was not the most important, yes it is the most famous but the more produced and real workhorse is being overlooked, the Mark IV. We all love the Tiger yes, but even too many sweets get old fast, need some newer models of overlooked vehicles:D
